ofc i'd love to give some tips! first thing i'll say is there is no right or wrong way to write a fic. there's no magic formula to follow. the best way to figure out what you like is to experiment and figure it out with practice and time. when i first started out my fics were really bad and i promise every writers starts out like that. we're all uncertain and learning how to do things better with time! that being said, i can definitely think of some things that might be helpful for new writers!
when starting a fic, one could start it with some dialogue from one of the characters to cut right into the scene. i'll use some examples from my past fics to help as well!
“Take a seat, I’ll be with you in a— Hanjin? What are you doing here?” you asked, bewildered.
this sets the scene immediately with no build up at all which can work quite well for shorter fics or simplistic fluff that doesn't need a lot of background information or context for the scene.
another more dramatic example of starting out with dialogue could look like this
“Jesus, fuck, Sunghoon—” You shrieked when you entered your apartment, not expecting your boyfriend to be hanging from the ceiling, eyes staring at the door. He floated down to the floor, not moving a muscle. You were used to his… supernatural way of moving around by now, but you hadn’t expected him to jumpscare you like that.
you can also start a fic by describing some background information about the characters or the setting of the fic!
Kai couldn’t write a single song that wasn’t about you. Although he always denied the fact, he knew that you were his inspiration. He poured his feelings out into pages and pages of lyrics, strumming patterns on his guitar in his studio for hours on end. The result was another smash hit, dominating the charts worldwide for weeks.
here i set up that kai is a very famous songwriter/artist, and that he has a crush on the reader in just a few sentences.
and another example of this
The rivalry between your family’s pear orchard and the Oh family’s apple orchard went back too far to even count. Generations of tradition went into the planting, pruning, harvesting, and selling of your pears, and you took great pride in it, much like the rest of your family.
i've described to the reader that the fic takes place on a pear orchard and there's a rivalry between two families.
another way you could try is starting out the scene with description, but in the current moment instead of background info
The night air nipped at your cheeks as thoughts swirled in your head. Hundreds of worries, feelings, and uncertainties followed you wherever you went, and all you could wish was to be back in high school when everything felt a bit easier.
Kamden had been sitting in the stale jail cell for nearly 72 hours, only allowed one plain meal a day and a jug of water. It was a bitter retribution for his miscalculation three days ago. Thinking he could take on three trained palace guards was overshooting his luck.
as for your specific fic idea where he's picking up the reader to go out you could start the scene with dialogue from the boyfriend greeting her or her greeting the boyfriend (example 1)
or you could describe background info about the date they had planned or how long they had been dating, etc (example 2)
or you can describe reading getting ready for the activity or the boyfriend pulling up to her house feeling nervous butterflies, etc. (example 3)
there's so many ways you can start out a fic and it's really up to you to figure out which one you like best for the mood and vibe you're going for. sometimes, making an opening really dramatic with either a lore dump if it's a more complicated au, or tense dialogue can immediately draw a reader in. other times, a character saying something sweet or a simple description of the scene can work well for modern au's or short fluff fics!
i hope this was helpful, i tried to explain it as best as i could! these are definitely not the only way to start out your fics, but these are the most common methods i find myself using! i'm happy to give any other tips or advice for starting out so feel free to ask whenever!!
