Malum is atmospheric and tense, but ultimately lightweight. It does something similar to Longlegs or The Empty Man, with a strong esoteric horror vibe built up around an individual who slowly uncovers their own place in broader events. Malum does it, but with less locations and less budget than either of those two films. The whole thing just feels so restrained in its scope. After a slow start, this film really finds its stride. Given the space to expand, this film targets a strange, trippy vibe - perhaps you could call it something like transcendental horror? It’s not Lovecraftian, but it has an atmospherically similar style.

This is one of the most ludicrous stories ever told. The whole premise is so camp and absurd. Frederic is apprenticed to a pirate king, but unlike most pirate kings, this pirate king is a kind chap, and his pirate band rarely make any money because they're always going about sparing people. Leaving the ship at the age of twenty one, Frederic goes away with Ruth: a pleasant but plain woman who had lived on board the ship for many…
