I fell asleep during the visually darker moments. Not the film's fault. I was tired. Bruce Greenwood is always nice to see working. It's fine. There wasn't much of a plot, but the acting was good enough to carry the film when I could actually see what was going on. The scenes at night were ambitious, but I don't think they worked the way they were supposed to.
Not Tarantino's best film. It's fine. Kurt Russell is fun, the action sequences are fun. It's a fun death-by-car exploitation film. The characters aren't very well-developed. Story kind of drags. Not much to say about it, really. It's a fun grindhouse film loaded to the gills with reference to other movies. Also, it was a waste of Mary Elizabeth Winstead. That was kind of annoying, and the fate of her character is unsettling.
Interesting piece of film history. D.W. Griffith's first film uses the setup he would later use quite often in his films, juxtaposing an idyllic American family with a representation of a group of people Griffith didn't like. In this case, it's Gypsies. It's fine. Griffith's talents as a storyteller are apparent, even if he would polish these talents later. I wouldn't watch it again, but it's something interesting for film students to view.
There's a reason I skipped this screening. I couldn't watch Sully a second time. A tension-less American hero drama that does absolutely nothing for me as a viewer. It's not as bad as American Sniper, though.
Clint Eastwood is a perfectly serviceable director from a technical standpoint, but from a storytelling perspective, it's a drag to sit through. As much as I like Tom Hanks, even his good performance as the title character doesn't save this movie. The trial that…
