I watched Psycho for the second time last week and the twist still gets me every time. One of the things that I love so much about this film is the moment you realize Norman Bates is a complete sociopath but you still do not hate him. Hitchcock uses the same technique in Vertigo, where Scottie stalks Madeline, and forces Judy to become this woman of his dreams also a sociopathic behavior. Hitchcock uses well timed cuts, and "perspective" shots that allow the viewer to see the characters much more in a grey area rather than in black and white.
One sequence where shots collide together is the sequence on the steps. The shot of the mother collides with the crowd shot etc until the sequence ends. The collision of shots is used to create a feeling of panic and distress. The speed of the shots alone causes the viewer anxiety and the collision of the shots forces the viewer to feel panic.
The second sequence I would like to reference is the sequence where Lugo escapes from the police and flees to the Bahamas. There is temporal discontinuity and a few jump cuts when he is being chased down by Victor.
I want to write about the sequence in pain and gain where Danny is training Victor. There is some intercutting and temporal discontinuity reminding me of Godard and Griffith.
