20th Century German Art

This book focuses on one of East Germany's most successful artists as a point of entry into the vibrant art world of the "other" Germany. In the 1980s, Bernhard Heisig (1925-2011) was praised on both sides of the Berlin Wall for his neo-expressionist style and his commitment to German history and art. Chancellor Helmut Kohl chose him to paint his official portrait, major museums collected his work, and in 1989 he had a major solo exhibition in West Germany. After unification, Heisig was a focal point in the Bilderstreit, a virulent debate over what role East German art should play in the new Germany. Challenging current understandings of Heisig and East German art, this book focuses on Heisig's little-known fight for modern art in East Germany. Examining major debates of the 1960s, it shows the key role he played in expanding the country's art from the limits of Soviet-style socialist realism to a socialist modernism that later gained recognition in the West.

The Erlöserkirche at Bad Homburg was built between 1903 and 1908 at the instigation of Kaiser Wilhelm II. It combines a neo-Romanesque exterior with Norman-Sicilian mosaics inside. Both were "Germanic" to the emperor, and the church embodied his all encompassing claim to the tradition of the medieval Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. Alternatively, the contemporary Byzantinist Ernst Gerland pointed to a Byzantine origin of the Norman-Sicilian models (and thus subtly contradicted the "pan-Germanic" myth). This "Byzantine" reading has prevailed ever since, but does not stand up to scrutiny. It only serves to obscure the "pan-Germanic" concept of the church. This contribution restores the "Germanic" understanding and makes the point that the latter must be acknowledged in order to make proper sense of the church's art and architecture, but also in order to face (rather than to downplay and conveniently forget) the racist-chauvinist character of German imperialism.

Sabine T. Kriebel's Revolutionary Beauty is the most thorough study to date of the Communist photomontage artist John Heartfield's work for the Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung (AIZ) in the late 1920s and 1930s. Kriebel analyses Heartfield's production through the frame of 'suture' , a concept she derives from film theory. She argues that Heartfield's work at once stimulated collective solidarity at the same time as it cultivated habits of visual suspicion and active political thinking in ways that may not have always coincided with official Communist aesthetic doctrine. Although Kriebel's approach yields many valuable insights, there is nonetheless a danger that her theory of subject-formation may preclude a more critical understanding of representative politics as a form of mediation.

Die Kinderbücher von Otto Dix. Versuch eines Überblicks 2 Ein glücklicher Zufall… Als ich im Frühjahr 2016 vorschlug, bei dem Studientag in Colmar über die Kinderbücher von Otto Dix zu sprechen, wusste ich noch nichts von den Nachforschungen der Düsseldorfer Galeristen zum sechsten Kinderbuch von Otto Dix. Im Rahmen meiner Vorbereitungen zu einem Buch über Otto Dix im Jahr 2011 führte ich mehrere Gespräche mit Jan Dix, dem Sohn des Künstlers, und mit seiner Enkelin Bettina. Bettina hatte mir ein Kinderbuch gezeigt, das sie bei sich zu Hause in Bevaix aufbewahrte. Damals wurde mir die Bedeutung der Kinderbücher klar. Die darin enthaltenen Aquarellzeichnungen eröffnen grundlegende Einblicke in den Menschen und den Künstler Otto Dix. Zwischen 1922 und 1931 gestaltete Dix fünf Kinderbücher: für Martin, genannt Muggeli, Kind aus erster Ehe seiner Frau Martha (1922); für dessen Schwester Hana (um 1925; dies ist das Kinderbuch, das 2016 von der Galerie Remmert und Barth entdeckt wurde); für seine älteste Tochter Nelly (um 1927) und für seine Söhne Ursus und Jan (1930 und 1931). 1955 gestaltete er für seine Enkelin Bettina ein letztes Kinderbuch. Das zuletzt entdeckte Kinderbuch unterstreicht die Bedeutung dieser Bücher, und zwar durch die darin abgebildeten biblischen Themen. Sie sagen viel über die Beziehung von Otto Dix zu seinen Kindern und der Kindheit im allgemeinen aus; durch ihre Verbindung untereinander zeigen sie aber auch die stilistische und spirituelle Entwicklung des Künstlers. Die Kinderbücher müssen also als Teil seines Gesamtwerks verstanden werden. Sie sind zwar zweifelsohne "kindgemäß", scheinen oft aber auch wie eine "Vorahnung" bzw. wie Vorstudien zu seinen Gemälden; beide Schaffensbereiche beeinflussen sich gegenseitig. Das Thema ist also sehr vielfältig und wurde bisher kaum untersucht, es gibt keinen synthetischen Ansatz. Ich möchte versuchen, verschiedene Thesen über die Kinderbücher von Otto Dix herauszuarbeiten und einige von ihnen näher zu beleuchten. Ein eigenes Genre? Die Kinderbücher von Otto Dix Wenn wir von "den Kinderbüchern" von Otto Dix sprechen, müssen wir als erstes präzisieren, dass es sich dabei nicht um Kinderbücher im allgemeinen Sinne handelt, sondern um ganz persönliche, private Bücher für seine Kinder. Laut Werkverzeichnis der Aquarelle von Otto Dix waren die Bücher für Jan und Ursus zwar 1931 oder 1932 3 in der Galerie Neue Kunst Fides von Rudolf Probst in Dresden ausgestellt, 1 doch hatte sie Dix in erster Linie für den privaten Gebrauch in der Familie angefertigt. Die Bücher waren ein Bindeglied zwischen ihm und seiner Frau Martha sowie eine Verbindung zu seinen Kindern, die stark von Bildern geprägt war. Die Kinderbücher, vor allem diejenigen für Nelly und Bettina, zeigen auch Verbindungen zu den Briefen von Otto Dix, die er gerne mit kleinen Skizzen über die Familie versah. In einem Brief an Martha aus dem Jahr 1930 zeichnete er Ursus, der vom Stuhl fällt; 2 eine ähnliche Zeichnung befindet sich auf dem Deckblatt des Kinderbuches für Ursus. 3 Man sieht dort Ursus, der auf den Buchstaben seines Namens herumturnt. Manche Zeichnungen aus Dix' Briefen erscheinen gar wie ein Entwurf für spätere Aquarellzeichnungen. Im Kinderbuch für Hana 4 zeichnet Dix Hans Koch (den ersten Mann von Martha Dix und Vater von Hana) als Ritter mit Ritterrüstung. Diese Zeichnung ist wahrscheinlich aus einer Skizze in einem Brief an Hans Koch aus dem Jahr 1922 entstanden. 5 Die Kinderbücher haben einen sehr persönlichen Charakter; vor allem in den Bilderbüchern für die Mädchen hat Dix Szenen aus dem Familienleben dargestellt, immer wieder ist die Familie Dix zu sehen. Bettina Dix, die Enkelin des Malers, erinnert sich daran, dass sie viel Zeit beim Großvater im Atelier verbracht hat. Sie hat Pinsel und Paletten ausgewaschen und den Boden gefegt; wie auf einer Zeichnung in ihrem Kinderbuch dargestellt. 6 Auch der Hund, der mehrmals in ihrem Buch zu sehen ist, 7 hat tatsächlich existiert, es war der Familienhund namens "Curry". 8 Vor allem in den Büchern für die Mädchen hat Dix die Kinder immer wieder 1 Suse Pfäffle, Otto Dix: Werkverzeichnis der Aquarelle und Gouachen, Stuttgart, Hatje, 2 Brief von Otto Dix an Martha Dix, [1930], [Dresden], mit Zeichnung Ursus, vom Stuhl gefallen.

Before uttering a word of his introductory remarks for the June 2018 opening of Charline von Heyl’s Snake Eyes exhibition at the Deichtorhallen (Hamburg), John Corbett, the Chicago gallerist and music champion nonpareil, lifted his smartphone to the mic and played a 2’10” free jazz piece by the Norwegian trio Moskus (Musk Ox). The piece was Fjesing (Emoticon) from their album Mestertyven (Master Thief). Corbett’s intent was to get the audience’s attention and to just, simply, make them take the time to focus on what they were hearing, experiencing. It was a lesson in mindfulness, presentness. In his remarks, Corbett spoke about his relationship to poetry as well, saying, “I read poetry the way I listen to improvised music. It’s not so important to interpret an improvisation as it is to experience it. . . at full scale. No abstract; no précis.”

In this essay, I explore the way in which the Dadaists used photomontage to critique the politics of the Weimar Republic, focusing on John Heartfield and George Grosz's photomontage on the cover of 'Everyone His Own Football', and Hannah Höch's 'Dada Panorama' and 'Heads of State'. In particular, I explore the way in which these artists used elements of femininity and techniques of feminization to accomplish a witty but sharp political critique.

"Working in Germany in the interwar era, John Heartfield (born Helmut Herzfeld, 1891–1968) developed an innovative method of appropriating and reusing photographs to powerful political effect. A pioneer of modern photomontage, he assembled images that transformed the meaning of the mass-media photos from which they were taken. In John Heartfield and the Agitated Image, Andrés Mario Zervigón explores this crucial period in the life and work of this brilliant, radical artist whose desire to disclose the truth obscured by the mainstream press and the propaganda of politicians made him a de facto prosecutor of Germany’s visual culture.

Zervigón charts the evolution of Heartfield’s photomontage from an act of antiwar resistance into a formalized and widely disseminated political art in the Weimar Republic, when his work appeared on everything from campaign posters to book covers. He explains how Heartfield’s engagement with montage arose from dissatisfaction with photography’s capacity to represent the modern world, and the result was likely the most important combination of avant-garde art and politics in the twentieth century. A rare look at Heartfield’s early and middle years as an artist and designer, this book provides a new understanding of photography’s role at this critical juncture in history."

The Bosnian Case: Art, History and Memory concerns the representation of historic and traumatogenic events in art through the specific case of the war in Bosnia 1992-1995. The research investigates an aftermath articulated through the Freudian concept of Nachträglichkeit, rebounding on the nature of representation in the art as always in the space of an "afterness". The ability to represent an originary traumatic scenario has been questioned in the theoretics surrounding this concept. Through The Bosnian Case and its art historical precedents, the research challenges this line of thinking, identifying, including through fieldwork in Bosnia in 2016, the continuation of the war in a war of images.

Josep Renau (Valencia 1907-Berlín 1982) es, sin duda, uno de los grandes creadores del arte español contemporáneo, pero también uno de sus artistas más singulares, polifacéticos y comprometidos. En ámbitos artístico-culturales muy diferentes, compaginó con clara conciencia y dedicación la pintura, el muralismo, la ilustración, el diseño gráfico y el fotomontaje, conformando una brillante y atractiva trayectoria vital y creativa, que es también la de una progresión. Progresión, por un lado, respecto al compromiso y el activismo socio-político del artista –esencialmente ligados a la línea comunista– y, por otro, respecto al vínculo de su plástica con la renovación y la vanguardia; pero, igualmente, condicionada por las diferentes situaciones de los tres países que enlazó su vida, su creatividad y su peregrinaje: España, México y la otrora República Democrática Alemana. Almost none of the more than 800 cemeteries of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge is described in detail as the Totenburg of Quero, Italy, on the right bank of the Piave river, near the fighting lines of the Ww1st front. This testifies to the importance and the representativeness of this architecutre for the Third Reich abroad.

The contributions of women are largely ignored in the history of art. Though the works of artists such as Artemesia Gentileschi, Berthe Morisot, and Mary Cassatt are known by sight, their names are rarely mentioned in discussing the great works and great artists of Western civilization, whether in art history textbooks, scholarly articles, or other sources. The stories of these women artists are even more invisible, despite immense talent, significant complexity and meaning in their art, and, often, struggles to reach these achievements. Women were excluded from the traditional academies, denied opportunities to work with the same subject matter as men, and even forced to have chaperones when they appeared in public, whereas men could move freely about alone (Cascone). As Hélène Bertaux, founder of Paris’s Union des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs, proclaimed in 1881, “The woman artist is an ignored, little-understood force, delayed in its rise! A social prejudice of sorts weighs upon her; and yet, every year, the number of women who dedicate themselves to art is swelling with fearsome speed” (para. 5). One of these women was Paula Modersohn-Becker, a prolific artist who bridged Post-Impressionism and German Expressionism, broke boundaries in her depictions of women, nudes, and self-portraiture, and lived a life she could call her own. As she expressed, “I believe the best thing is for one to go one’s own way as if in a dream” (“Paula Modershon-Becker”).

Alors que des classes sociales – tel que les aristocrates – disparaissent dans une spirale de débauche, d’autres – telle que les femmes – émergent dans une frénésie de modernité. Christian Schad côtoie ces milieux de près. Lui même, entretenu par son père jusqu’au crash de 1929 et ne cherchant pas à vivre de sa peinture, se complait dans cette ville dont il connait les rouages, comme en temoigne la publication du « Guide du Berlin Débauché » en 1930 qu’il illustre.

Joseph Beuys term “Soziale Plastik" not only classified his own artistic practice as essentially sculptural but, more importantly, it allowed him to thematize its heterogenous relationships to art market, exhibition, museum, and various modes of reception, and to stake its political claim. A close analysis of Beuys’s contribution to the 1977 documenta, “Honey Pump at the Workplace,” reveals that the layered invocation of plasticity characteristic of Beuys’s practice and theorizing ought not be historicized, as is commonly done, as an instantiation of the excessive, transgressive–and quite possibly disingenuous–zeal of a “neoavantgarde.” Beuys’s “Plastik” should not be confused with anti-aesthetic formlessness, base materialism, a post-Duchampian ruination of the objet trouvé, and least of all a Neoromantic or Wagnerian projection or hypostatization of the autonomous work of art. The avantgardes of the 20th century have rendered the relationship of art and aesthetics tenuous at best, their artistic “innovations” straining against the supratemporally or anthropologically defined characteristics of aesthetic valuation, play, or force. Many have sought to address this problem by tethering art to society in a shared “contemporaneity.” What would be the implications of recasting this relation of art and society as one of “plasticity”–with all the conceptual forcefulness presented in Catherine Malabou’s work?

Die Nationalgalerie der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin besitzt eine der weltweit bedeutendsten Sammlungen der Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts. Das zweibändige Bestandsverzeichnis enthält 1.800 Werke der Zeit 1905 bis 1945. Es dokumentiert eindrücklich die Entwicklung der Kunst mit Werken des Expressionismus, Dada oder der Neuen Sachlichkeit bis hin zu anderen nationalen und internationalen Tendenzen. Die im Katalog versammelten Werke umfassen Malerei, Skulptur und Grafik von hunderten Künstlerinnen und Künstlern wie Max Beckmann, Lovis Corinth, Otto Dix, Georges Grosz, Hannah Höch, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Lotte Laserstein, Pablo Picasso oder René Sintenis. Neben diesen Protagonisten sind auch zahlreiche Werke zu finden, die in die allzu simple Erzählung einer reinen Avantgarde-Geschichte nicht passen und andere Perspektiven auf die Kunst jener Zeit eröffnen. Die Werke werden mit präzisen, vielfach neu erforschten Werk- und Ankaufsdaten und anhand von prägnanten Kurztexten vorgestellt. Der vollständig bebilderte Katalog enthält Texte von über 50 namhaften Autorinnen und Autoren. Zwei einführende Aufsätze erläutern die Geschichte der Sammlung und ihre Bedeutung für die Kunstgeschichte.

L’étude propose une analyse critique de l’ouvrage Autoportrait de Hans Hartung publié en 1976 aux éditions Grasset. L’auteure, après avoir travaillé pendant sept ans sur les archives de Hans Hartung à la Fondation Hartung-Bergman a compilé un ensemble de données qui offrent un nouveau regard sur la construction diégétique et les propos livrés dans l’Autoportrait sur l’expérience du peintre Hartung.
