Child Brides

Background: The persistently high prevalence of girl-child marriage remains a public health and developmental concern in Nigeria. Despite global campaign against the practice and policy efforts by Nigerian government, the prevalence remains unabated. This study investigates the prevalence and the influence of ethnicity and religious affiliation on the girl-child marriage among female adolescents in Nigeria. Methods: Data of 7804 girls aged 15-19 years extracted from the 2013 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey were used. Ethnic groups were classified into five: major Northern ethnic group (Hausa/Fulani); Northern ethnic minorities; two major Southern ethnic groups (Yoruba and Igbo), and Southern ethnic minorities. The prevalence of girl-child marriage was determined for the five ethnic groups and individually for each ethnic minority group. Relationships between ethnicity and religious affiliation on girl-child marriage were explored using Cox proportional hazard regression models, adjusting for residence, education and wealth quintile. Results: Child marriage was higher for the Northern majority ethnic group of Hausa/Fulani (54.8%) compared to the two major Southern ethnic groups (3.0-3.6%) and aggregated Northern ethnic minorities (25.7%) and Southern minorities (5.9%). However, overall, the less known Northern ethnic minority groups of Kambari (74.9%) and Fulfude (73.8%) recorded the highest prevalence. Compared to the major Southern ethnic group of Yoruba, the adjusted hazard ratio (AHR) of child marriage was significantly higher for Northern ethnic minorities (AHR = 2.50; 95% C.I. = 1.59-3.95) and Northern major ethnicity (AHR = 3.67, 95% C.I. = 2.33-5.77). No significant difference was recorded among Southern ethnic groups. Girls affiliated to other religions (Muslim and traditionalist) had higher childmarriage risks compared to Christians (AHR = 2.10; 95% C.I. = 1.54-2.86). Conclusion: Ethnicity and religion have independent associations with girl-child marriage in Nigeria; interventions must address culturally-laden social norms that vary by ethnic groups as well as religious-related beliefs.

How social media can be used and abused has become a pressing question globally. It has also become a framework for examining the nature of power in the circumstances in which powerless people operate. And in patriarchal societies, women are often the least powerful among the powerless.

Çocuk gelinler, çok uzun yıllardır problem olarak bilinen ve çözümü de bir o kadar zor olarak kabul edilen bir realitedir. Hacettepe Üniversitesi'nin yapmış olduğu araştırma verilerine göre ülkemizdeki her üç evlilikten birisi çocuk yaşta gerçekleşmektedir. Böyle bir problemin en etkin çözümünün toplumsal değerlerde meydana gelecek değişiklikler ve toplumsal zihniyetlerin değiştirilmesi ile mümkün olabileceği bilinmektedir.

Bilindiği gibi ülkemiz son yıllarda Suriye'den önemli oranda bir göç aldı. Suriyeli sığınmacılar Türkiye'ye gelmeye başladıktan sonra, kızlarının namus ile ilgili bir sıkıntı yaşamaması, hiç olmazsa kalacak daimi bir evlerinin olması, ekonomik yüklerinin olmaması vb. gerekçelerle kızlarının erken yaşlarda evlenmelerine onay verdiler. Bu da ülkemizde çocuk gelinler probleminin daha da istenmeyen boyutlara ulaşmasını sağladı. Biz de bu çalışma ile sığınmacı olarak ülkemize gelen ve erken yaş evliliği yapan bu kadınların yaşamış oldukları ve yaşamaları muhtemel olan problemleri ve bu evliliklere dair istatistikleri sosyolojik bir bakış açısı ile ortaya koymaya çalışacağız.

Bride-Price, Poverty and Domestic Violence in Uganda

This report outlines the key findings from the first-ever research study on Bride-Price, Poverty and Domestic Violence in Uganda, conducted as a response both to the growing interest in the practice of bride-price and to moves for its reform in Uganda and other countries in Africa.  The research was undertaken between January 2008 and June 2009 through an international collaboration between MIFUMI, an NGO and women's rights agency based in Uganda working on domestic violence and poverty alleviation, and two UK research groups, the Violence Against Women Research Group, University of Bristol, and the Centre for the Study of Safety and Well-being, University of Warwick. 

The aims of the research were to:
    • Investigate, through an action research approach, the impacts of bride-price on the capabilities of women, children and families in terms of development, quality of life, health, decision-making and community participation.
    • Explore possible inter-relations between bride-price and poverty and between bride-price and domestic violence.
    • Develop policy recommendations for Uganda, and to contribute to national, pan-African and global debate on .
    • Develop a local action-oriented dissemination plan, including a collaboratively developed community awareness-raising programme.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHRC) has identified that refugee children's participation in mainstream schooling in many refugee host countries (RHCs) is substantially lower than their settled peers and that for girls the gap is even more significant. Furthermore, the gap between refugee girls, their settled peers and refugee boys widens, as girls get older. This is often attributed to social and cultural traditions that under-value girls' education and limit their participation in activities outside the home or immediate community setting. This project has explored the literature around arts-based interventions aimed at girls and young women and the particular affordances and ethical complexities of these.

Öz Bu çalışmanın konusu yaygın olarak görülen çocuk gelin kavramının nedenleri ve sonuçlarındaki belirleyici durumları ortaya koyup erken evliliklerin önlenmesine katkıda bulunmaktır. Erken yaşta yapılan evlilikler çocukta fiziksel, ruhsal, eğitim başarısızlığı ve toplumsal gelişimini engelleyen bir takım sorunlar oluşturmaktadır. Ataerkil ve geleneksel toplum yapısının hâkim olduğu birçok toplumda olduğu gibi Türkiye'de de çocuk yaşta evlilik, zorla gerçekleştirilen yaygın bir küresel sorun olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Erken evliliklerin devamlılığını sağlayan başlıca etken, toplumsal sorun değil olarak değil toplumsal gereklilik olarak görülmesiyle ilişkilidir. Ebeveyn tutumu, çarpıtılmış din referanslı açıklamalar, eğitimsizlik veya hukuki süreçlerin tam olarak toplum hayatına yansıtılamaması sorunun çözümünü zorlaştırmaktadır. Erken evlilik her iki cinsiyette de sorun olmasına karşın özellikle kız çocukların hayatını daha fazla etkilemektedir. Toplumda hâkim olan kadına yönelik cinsiyetçi bakış açısı erken yaşta evlendirilen kız çocuklarının olumsuz konumlarını iyice pekiştirmektedir. Kadın bir neslin yetişme sürecinde ilk rehber olduğu için kadınların gelişmesi toplumun gelişmesi bakımından çok önemlidir. Bu yüzden çocuk gelinler yalnızca bireysel sorun olarak değil toplumsal sorun olarak da görülmelidir. Çocuk gelin olma sorununa önleyici olarak; eğitim seviyesinin ve bireysel farkındalıkların artırılması, hukuki kurallardaki çelişkilerin düzenlenmesi ve yasakların topluma güçlü şekilde hissettirilmesi, toplum yapısının üretmiş olduğu toplumsal cinsiyet rollerinin dayanak kullanıldığı olumsuz durumların engellenmesi ve ataerkil yapıyla mücadele edilmesi gerektiği belirlenmiştir.

ÖZ Modern hukuk sistemleri her ne kadar 18 yaş öncesi evlilikleri suç olarak kabul etse de dünya genelinde çocuk evliliklerin olduğu görülmektedir. Bu olgunun sadece belirli bölgelerde değil dünya genelinde yaygın oluşu, çocuk evliliklerin kültürel bir olgu olduğu iddiasını çürütmektedir. Çocuğun beden bütünlüğü ve psikolojik sağlığı üzerinde olumsuz etkilere ve hatta kalıcı hasarlara yol açan çocuk yaşta evlilikler, üzerinde çokça çalışılması gereken bir konudur. Bu maksatla çalışmada "çocuk gelin" olarak da adlandırılan bu olgu incelemeye alınmış, çocuk yaşta evliliğin ne olduğu, bu olgunun ortaya çıkma sebepleri değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmada toplumun çocuk yaşta evlilikler hakkında yaklaşımı ve bilinç düzeyi tartışılarak, toplumsal farkındalığın arttırılmasına dikkat çekilmiştir. Bu noktada medyanın rolü ve çocuk evlilikleri hakkında yapılan haberleri ele alış ve aktarış biçimi incelenmiştir. Toplumun değer yargıları ve farkındalık düzeyinin yükselmesi ve şekillenmesi noktasında çok önemli bir güce sahip olan yayın organlarının çocuk yaşta evlilikler ile ilgili dikkat etmesi gereken noktalar vurgulanmıştır. Bu derleme çalışmasının çocuk gelin olgusu konusunda önleyici çalışmalar için bir kaynak niteliğinde olması hedeflenmiştir. Abstract
Although modern legal systems accept marriages before the age of 18 as a crime,
child marriages can be seen worldwide. The fact that this phenomenon is
widespread not only in certain regions but also throughout the world refuses the
claim that child marriage is a cultural phenomenon. Child marriages, which have
negative effects and even permanent damages on the physical integrity and
psychological health of the child, should be studied comprehensively. For this
purpose, this study examines the concept of child marriage, which is also referred as
“child bride”. Moreover, the reasons behind this phenomenon were evaluated. In
this study, the society's approach to child marriage and the level of their
consciousness are discussed, and social awareness on child brides is emphasized. At
this point, the role of the media and the way of approaching news about child
marriages are examined. The points the press needs to pay attention to are
emphasized, for the media is known for its big role on increasing and shaping the
values and awareness level of the society. It is hoped that this review study will
become a source for preventive studies on the phenomenon of child bride.

18 June 2015, the plead to raise the minimum age for girls to get married, from 16 to 18 years old, was rejected by Indonesia’s court (Mahkamah Konstitusi). The decision contradicted international value—that children, defined as anyone under 18 years old, should not have their rights violated through marriage—concerning child marriage as well as highlighted the fact that Indonesia’s Law of Marriage legalize child—16 years old girl or younger if her religion or belief allows it—marriage. The case, and the issue of child marriage or child brides in Indonesia, embodied conflicting discourses. This paper attempts to reveal the discourses on child marriage as reproduced by Kompas.com’s—one of Indonesia’s online media—June 2015 to October 2015 publications (14 articles) and unmask the ideology behind Kompas.com’s position, using Wodak’s (2001, p. 72-73; Wodak and Meyer, 2009, p. 93-118; with Rybnikova’s (2016, p. 120) and author’s own modification) discourse-historical approach (DHA) of critical discourse analysis (CDA).

Bu çalışma Suriyeli çocukların erken yaşta evlenmelerinin gazete haberlerinde nasıl sunulduğuna dikkat çekmek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Suriyeli çocuk gelinlerin gazete haberlerinde hangi bağlamlarda ve nasıl bir haber dili kullanılarak sunulduğu, gazete haberlerinde sunum benzerliklerinin veya farklılıklarının olup olmadığı 01 Ocak 2013-01 Eylül 2016 tarihleri arasında ve Habertürk ve Milliyet gazetelerinde yayınlanan Suriyeli çocukların erken yaşta evlenmeleri haberleri incelenerek belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Gazetelerin seçiminde tirajlar etkili olmuştur. Söz konusu bu iki gazete Türkiye’de satış rakamların yüksek olduğu gazeteler arasında yer almaktadır. Gazetelerin internet sayfalarının arama motorlarından “Suriyeli çocukların erken yaşta evlilikleri”, “Suriyeli çocuk gelinler” anahtar kavranılan kullanılarak elde edilen haberler, “eleştirel söylem analizi’ yöntemiyle değerlendirilmiştir.
Çalışmanın ilk bölümünde çocuklaIn erken yaşta evlilik olgusu küresel boyutta incelenmekte, Suriyeli çocukların erken yaştaki evlilikleri çocuk haklan boyutuyla ele
alınmaktadır. Çalışmanın bulgular bölümünde ise Suriyeli çocukların erken yaştaki evlilikleri gazete başlıklar ve haber içeriklerinde yer alış biçimlerine göre incelenmektedir.

18 Juni 2015, pengajuan uji materi Undang-Undang Perkawinan untuk menaikkan batas usia perkawinan perempuan, dari 16 menjadi 18 tahun, ditolak Mahkamah Konstitusi. Keputusan itu bertentangan dengan nilai internasional—bahwa anak, yang didefinisikan sebagai semua yang belum berusia 18 tahun, dilindungi haknya dari eksploitasi apapun, termasuk dari perkawinan—dan membuktikan hukum Indonesia melegalkan pernikahan anak. Kasus ini, dan topik pernikahan anak atau pengantin anak di Indonesia, merefleksikan konflik wacana. Penelitian ini bertujuan memetakan wacana pernikahan anak sebagaimana direproduksi Kompas.com dalam pemberitaannya terkait usia menikah anak perempuan publikasi Juni 2015 hingga Oktober 2015 (14 artikel) dan mengungkap ideologi yang melatarbelakanginya, menggunakan analisis wacana kritis Wodak. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan pemberitaan Kompas.com mendukung pencegahan pernikahan anak untuk melindungi hak anak, khususnya anak perempuan. Ideologi feminisme liberal—kampanye demi kesetaraan bagi perempuan atas hak warga negara dan alokasi sumber daya sosial seperti pendidikan (Freedman, 2001, h. 8; Giddens, 2001, h. 692)—melandasi posisi Kompas.com tersebut.

s from database searches were downloaded to the reference management software Zotero, where deduplication of abstracts was performed. These entries were screened for inclusion/exclusion, with records kept on numbers of studies excluded. We kept records in Excel for abstracts/report summaries obtained from grey literature sources (e.g. UN websites) and recorded the number of studies excluded at this stage. After all abstracts were screened and relevant abstracts identified, three reviewers retrieved the full text papers, which were then screened against the inclusion criteria again. Records on full texts included/excluded were noted. Included studies were input to a group “DFID Evidence Map” folder in Zotero.

Trafficking, Organized Crime, and Security is a multidisciplinary peer-reviewed journal that focuses on the trafficking of persons as a human rights violation that sets its victims on a perilous trajectory. As a framework, the Journal will focus on disseminating information related to understanding the trends and patterns of human trafficking; basic structure of criminal organizations; and human insecurity. In this issue, the editors invite authors to submit abstracts that are empirical, theoretical, conceptual, legal, or policy in nature that are specific to Human Trafficking and Sham Marriages. Sham marriages are those entered into for fraudulent, deceptive, coercive, and/or lucrative purposes. In the context of human trafficking, women and girls are primarily the victims of such marriages. Addressing human trafficking and sham marriages requires a multidisciplinary approach. Scholars in the fields of economics, social work, law, public health, criminal justice, women/gender studies, sociology, public policy, history, business, psychology, and others are encouraged to submit journal article abstracts. Possible topics include, but are not limited to the following:

'Early marriage' is a relatively common, but under-researched global phenomenon, associated with poor health, mental health, educational and occupational outcomes, particularly for young girls. In this article, we draw on qualitative interviews with 6 Nigerian women from Sokoto State, who were married between the ages of 8 and 15. The interviews explored young women's experiences of the transition to marriage, being married, pregnancy and their understanding of the marital and parental role. Using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, we explore women's constrained articulations of their experiences of early marriage, as they are constituted within a social context where the identity of 'woman' is bound up in values and practices around marriage and motherhood. We explore the complexity of 'hearing' women's experiences when their identities are bound up in culturally overdetermined ideas of femininity that function explicitly to silence and constrain the spaces in which women can speak.

School is back and along with it our prejudices. We try to fight against them. But we cannot always succeed. Because humans have proven that it is not easy to erase discriminatory tendencies. Humans are set in their ways. Every now and then we catch a wave and see beyond the surface.
