本文介紹意大利納玻里“中華書院”所用的中文教科書《三字經》(1869),並探討其基礎方言。清末時期,在遠離中國的意大利,所教授的是什麼樣的中文呢?這個問題是在研究近代漢語學習史以及域外漢語研究史上一個非常有趣的課題。本文對中華書院的中文教學內容進行考察,試圖闡明中華書院所教授的中文的音系。通過整理,可以構擬出22個聲母,45個韻母和5個調。本文詳細闡述《三字經》所反映的音系為湖北方言。這符合郭棟臣的個人經歷,是完全合理的。
