One of the most important social phenomena in the global context is the flow of immigration from developing countries, motivated by economic and employment related issues. Discrimination can be approached as a health risk factor within the immigrant population’s working environment, especially for those immigrants at greater risk from social exclusion and marginalisation. The aim of this study is to research perceptions of discrimination and the specific relationship between discrimination in the workplace and health among Spain’s immigrant population. A qualitative study was performed by means of 84 interviews and 12 focus groups held with immigrant workers in five cities in Spain receiving a large influx of immigrants (Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante and Huelva), covering representative immigrant communities in Spain (Romanians, Moroccans, Ecuadorians, Colombians and Sub Saharan Africans). Discourse narrative content analysis was performed using pre established categories and gradually incorporating other emerging categories from the immigrant interviewees themselves. The participants reported instances of discrimination in their community and working life, characterised by experiences of racism, mistreatment and precarious working conditions in comparison to the Spanish- born population. They also talked about limitations in terms of accessible occupations (mainly construction, the hotel and restaurant trade, domestic service and agriculture), and described major difficulties accessing other types of work (for example public administration). They also identified political and legal structural barriers related with social institutions. Experiences of discrimination can affect their mental health and are decisive factors regarding access to healthcare services. Our results suggest the need to adopt integration policies in both the countries of origin and the host country, to acknowledge labour and social rights, and to conduct further research into individual and social factors that affect the health of the immigrant populations.

The integration of the immigrants in the European societies is the great challenge these countries have to face in the 21st century. One of the problems added to this phenomenon is the immigrant minors that are not accompanied by adults. These children and youngsters abandon their homes with the hope of finding a better life in Europe without an adult accompanying them. This article intends to give an idea of the situation these minors live in through an extensive analysis of the reasons that leads them to immigrate, their socio-demographic characteristics, the immigration legislation and the social intervention tools we have habilitated in the community of Madrid.

Migration is one the most important demographic component to determine the size, growth and structure of population of a particular region, besides fertility and mortality. For a large country like India, the study of movement of population in different parts of the country helps in understanding the dynamics of the society and societal change better. Bhubaneswar is one of the magnets for migrants in east India attributing to its exponential growth rates. This is an attempt  to map the migration pattern in the city and the state.

Na realidade, esta é a questão que deve dominar este ensaio: como é possível, ao mesmo tempo, respeitar a liberdade de ir e vir do indivíduo, seus direitos inscritos em tratados internacionais e legislações nacionais, e, ao mesmo tempo não ultrapassar
os limites impostos pela soberania estatal de limitar alguns desses mesmos direitos?

La presente investigación tiene como propósito establecer la cantidad de inmigrantes europeos que llegaron a la ciudad de Bogotá a principios del siglo XX (1900 – 1920) y determinar en qué medida su presencia influyó en varios comportamientos de la sociedad capitalina, a través de un análisis descriptivo de la prensa, correspondencia, visas, informes, denuncias, censos, crónicas y literatura costumbrista contemporánea de la época. La investigación está divida en tres capítulos. El primero retrata la migración que llegó a Colombia a mediados de los siglos XIX y XX, en contraste con la registrada en Brasil y Argentina en este mismo periodo de tiempo, identificando las causas y consecuencias de estos procesos migratorios. En el segundo se abordará la llegada de los inmigrantes a Bogotá, estableciendo su identidad, nacionalidad, ocupaciones y adaptación a la ciudad, por medio de un estudio estadístico. También se dará un espacio para hablar de la capital del país, detallando sus rasgos económicos, sociales y urbanísticos. El tercer y último capítulo, se centrará en estudiar propiamente a la sociedad bogotana y como esta apropió ciertas características de la cultura europea para sus propios fines.
En suma, con esta investigación se pretende esclarecer una parte desconocida de la historia de Bogotá, mostrando hasta qué punto la influencia foránea ayudó a crear y a constituir la capital colombiana.

The paper is about one of the possible types of discrimination of women nowadays: the indirect acceptance of polygamy when law authorizes that one male immigrant applies for family reunification bringing several women to a host country. Although Spanish legislation doesn`t allow that as it is explained in this work, Belgian Constitutional Court permitted it in 2008.

The paper presents a study on the impact Cubans have had in the economic, cultural and social life in Jamaica, mainly through a comparative study of two decades, the 1890's and the 1990's. The paper is the result of an ongoing study on this matter and presents information collected through interviews to Cuban descendants and persons related to Cuban immigrants. There was an extensive search on articles published by the Jamaican press in the 19th Century, specially The Gleaner.

This research work studied a historical-musical process of medium duration (1880-1910), focusing on the delimitation of a aesthetic-musical field in San Juan (Argentine), since the reception of the Italian immigrants’ music. It covered from the decade when the first news about the Italian Colecchia family are registered in San Juan, until the socio-musical changes we observe since the Centenary of May Revolution.
Finding scores and personal documents of the Colecchia family originated a heuristic corpus which will in turn be transferred to custody of the Gabinete de Estudios Musicales of the Universidad Nacional de San Juan. This material, until then unexplored, raised a number of querries about its production, communication and reception in the community, that started the investigation. Therefore, the study of the story of these musicians, appropriated of their socio-cultural and historical universe and in the context of the reference and groups they belonged to, contributes to the new history of regional music.

En el contexto del restablecimiento de la dinámica diplomática sino-costarricense, China financió la construcción de un nuevo estadio nacional en Costa Rica, a lo que el país centroamericano respondió por medio de la Municipalidad de San José con un proyecto de barrio chino en la ciudad capital.

El primer proyecto funciona como símbolo por excelencia de las identidades nacionales contemporáneas, y el segundo de las identidades históricas de los chinos de ultramar. En Costa Rica, la identidad nacional de alimentarse de los héroes de la patria y algunos símbolos políticos, pasó a hacerlo por los logros deportivos, en especial los futbolísticos. Y la identidad de un barrio chino, constructo socio-histórico de “generación espontánea” surgido de la inmigración en búsqueda de la supervivencia y nuevas oportunidades de vida, simplemente, en Costa Rica nunca ocurrió. El primer tipo de identidad se concibe desde arriba (poder político), mientras que el segundo fluye desde abajo (la cultura). Entonces, ¿cómo se inventa un barrio chino en el siglo XXI? En este juego de identidades, ¿hasta que punto desde arriba estos proyectos de infraestructura en el corto plazo se materializan hacia abajo?

Nel contesto europeo attuale, i principali indicatori socio-economici suggeriscono che i lavoratori autonomi di origine straniera costituiscono una parte importante delle piccole e medie imprese. Gli immigrati che si stabiliscono nei Paesi europei sono generalmente considerati come aventi un alto grado di creazione d’impresa rispetto alla media della popolazione autoctona. Partendo da queste premesse, il presente contributo si prefigge di esplorare questo fenomeno attraverso una chiave di lettura multidisciplinare, analizzando gli aspetti giuridico-procedurali, specie per ciò che concerne la condizione dello straniero extra-europeo. Attraverso l’analisi del nesso tra Imprenditorialità, immigrazione e sviluppo, lo studio pretende rilevare eventuali criticità nell’accesso all’attività autonoma, cercando altresì di comprendere se essa possa rappresentare una solida via per l’integrazione dei soggetti migranti e lo sviluppo delle comunità locali.

La población inmigrante en España experimentó un crecimiento rápido y progresivo desde la última década del siglo XX hasta los comienzos de XXI. En este contexto, los flujos migratorios procedentes de Ecuador han sido unos de los más significativos desde el punto de vista cuantitativo. La integración social de estos inmigrantes pasa necesariamente por el plano lingüístico, cobrando, en el caso de la población hispanohablante, una especial relevancia factores psicosociales que afectan a la esfera del individuo.

Atendiendo a los últimos enfoques cognoscitivos en el estudio de las variedades del español, en las páginas de esta obra se analiza de qué manera influye la lengua en la integración de los inmigrantes ecuatorianos residentes en la ciudad de Madrid y se plantean hipótesis sobre el modo en que se está produciendo su integración sociolingüística, detectando los factores que condicionarán este proceso. Para ello, dada la incidencia directa de las actitudes lingüísticas en la integración sociolingüística y en los procesos de acomodación comunicativa, el libro ofrece un estudio de actitudes hacia las variedades ecuatoriana y madrileña, aplicando una metodología sociolingüística, de fuerte base psicosocial, que combina técnicas tanto cualitativas como cuantitativas, así como de medición directa e indirecta.

This work is a mixture of self-ethnography, essay and research about personal experiences around Colombian South Pacific traditional music and the social processes regarding the development of music in Colombia. This writing has made me reconnect with the tradition of the chonta marimba in Barcelona, not merely as a musical research for creative purposes, but also as a possibility to give it visibility and value. Here, aside from the portrayed reflections and experiences, is also a basic approach to the Colombian South Pacific music, its repertoire, rhythms, musicians, spirit and relevance.

RESUMEN

Esta investigación presenta los primeros resultados del análisis del corpus INMIGRA (http://www.grupoinmigra-imasd.es), compuesto por textos periodísticos extraídos de diarios generalistas de pago ("ABC" y "El País"), generalistas gratuitos ("20 minutos" y "ADN") y específicos de los colectivos inmigrantes ("Latino" y "Sí, se puede"), recopilados en la primera quincena de los meses de octubre y noviembre de 2008. Nuestro propósito es ocuparnos del tratamiento lingüístico otorgado a cuestiones de diverso cariz relacionadas con la inmigración latinoamericana y con la imagen que de ella, así como de los grupos de población inmigrante, se ofrece en los medios reseñados. Concretamente, en nuestra investigación hemos partido de los temas predominantes en las diferentes piezas informativas para analizar las referencias a los sujetos y actores de la información y los tipos de encuadre que ofrecen los medios seleccionados sobre la realidad de la inmigración.

ABSTRACT

“The journalistic discourse about Latin American immigration in Spain: the INMIGRA corpus”

This paper offers the first research analysis of the INMIGRA corpus (http://www.grupoinmigra-imasd.es). This corpus is formed by journalistic texts from general-interest, reference, non free Spanish newspapers (“ABC” and “El País”), general-interest free newspapers (“20 minutos” and “ADN”), and newspapers specifically oriented to immigrant population (“Latino” and “Sí, se puede”). The texts were compiled in the first fortnight of both October and November 2008. Our aim is to deal with the linguistic treatment given to different issues related to Latin American immigration, as well as with the images of immigration transferred by the above mentioned newspapers. Specifically, we have started studying the key issues considered in the different information pieces, with the double purpose of analyzing the references made of the subjects and actors of the information, and also the framing types provided by these media about the reality of immigration.

Spain's policy with flows of migrants from Africa, especially sub-Saharan Africa, has reached an intensity and considerable diversification. The author studies the framework of such cooperation, contained in the two Africa Plans I and II, and examines the various types of immigration agreements, including the agreements signed with neighboring countries, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania, devoting attention to the agreements new generation with sub-Saharan Africa. /  La política de España con los flujos de emigrantes procedentes de África, especialmente del África subsahariana, ha alcanzado una intensidad y una diversificación muy considerable. Existe un conjunto de características que parece remitir a los alcances de lo que significó ser británico en Buenos Aires a mediados-fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX, como la puntualidad o la "palabra de inglés". Este trabajo pretende revisitar y resignificar una serie de supuestos que signaron ese “ser británico”, construyendo esa figura desde la historia cultural y poniendo el foco en los espacios materiales y culturales que fueron construidos por la comunidad y, a su vez, contribuyeron a construirla como tal. Los suburbios y los clubes deportivos se presentan como esos espacios para indagar acerca de algunas de las aristas distintivas de las representaciones, las imágenes y las huellas construidas de la comunidad británica en Buenos Aires, en relación al paisaje, el ocio y la arquitectura. Respecto al marco temporal del trabajo se extiende en un periodo que va desde 1864, año en que se formaliza el funcionamiento del primer club deportivo fundado por la comunidad, hasta 1908 que es cuando se inaugura el edificio principal de ese mismo club, íntegramente prefabricado, en una localidad suburbana.

There is a set of characteristics that seems to refer to the scope of what meant to be British in Buenos Aires in the mid-late XIXth and early XXth centuries, such as punctuality or the "English word". This work aims to revisit and resignify a series of assumptions that marked that "British being", building that figure from cultural history and focusing on the material and cultural spaces that were built by the community and, in turn, contributed to its construction as such. The suburbs and sports clubs are presented as those spaces to inquire about some of the distinctive edges of the representations, images and footprints built by the British community in Buenos Aires, in relation to landscape, leisure and architecture. Regarding the time frame of the work, the period from 1864, the year in which the foundation of the first sports club by the community is formalized, until 1908, when the main building of the same club, completely prefabricated, was inaugurated in a suburban town.

Se investigó un proceso histórico-musical de mediana duración (1880-1910), acotado a la integración e incidencia de los músicos de la familia italiana Colecchia en el pasado cultural de la región cuyana. Abarcó desde la década en que registramos las primeras noticias de esta familia en San Juan, hasta los cambios socio-musicales que observamos a partir del Centenario de la Revolución de Mayo.
El  hallazgo de partituras, instrumentos olvidados y documentación personal de la familia Colecchia, originó un corpus heurístico que pasará a la custodia del Gabinete de Estudios Musicales de la Universidad Nacional de San Juan.  Este material, hasta entonces no explorado, nos planteó una serie de interrogantes acerca de su producción, comunicación y recepción en el medio, que iniciaron la investigación.
La historia de estos músicos, apropiados de su universo socio-cultural e histórico y contextualizados en sus grupos de pertenencia y de referencia, explica los modos de integración de inmigrantes que no cumplían las expectativas primarias del medio receptor, por no ser trabajadores rurales. Por lo tanto su estudio contribuye no sólo a una historia de la música regional, sino también a una historia de lo social global.

Immigration gives rise to global and local changes that challenge social norms and affect our lives. By involving immigrants in design processes, we emphasize designers’ responsibility for social inclusion. In this context, our main question is how to engage with immigrants in participatory design research.
To answer this question, we present a review of a recent research approach we applied in Helsinki (Finland) while collaborating with immigrants in a design project. Arising from this study, it is our recommendation that design researchers working with immigrants must take into account the question of emotional involvement. In this article, together with a mental health specialist, we analyze our findings in order to provide insights into how designers could create better interactions with vulnerable populations while conducting fieldwork. Among others, we recommend that dealing with emotions requires debriefing and defusing processes.

La incursión de Twitter en las dinámicas de comunicación de los partidos políticos es un hecho que ya ha captado la atención de investigadores como Parmelee y Bichard (2011), (Shirky, 2011), Zurutuza (2012), Deltell, Claes y Osteso (2013), Cebrián, Vázquez y Olabarrieta (2013) o Gelado y Bonete (2017). Si bien la repercusión de Twitter en el modo de relacionarse de representantes y representados tal vez no haya cambiado tanto como pudo pensarse a raíz de las primeras interpretaciones de este impacto, hay pocas dudas de que son muchos los políticos que ven en Twitter, como poco, una ventana inmediata de trasladar sus discursos a la ciudadanía.

This article analyzes the repercussions of Italy's entry into the Great War, based on the positions of the Buenos Aires periodical press and the ethnic press of the Italian collectivity.

RESUMEN

El análisis de la integración sociolingüística de la población inmigrante es una de las más interesantes tareas a las que se enfrenta la Sociolingüística del siglo XXI. Estas páginas van a considerar tal análisis como su objeto de estudio final, a propósito del cual se plantearán unos objetivos generales y se determinarán unas tareas de investigación. La finalidad principal de este trabajo es crear un marco teórico de referencia para abordar el estudio de la integración sociolingüística de la población inmigrante en una comunidad de acogida. Esta labor se considera previa a cualquier trabajo de campo y a la propuesta de otros objetivos particulares en relación con el proceso de la integración sociolingüística.

ABSTRACT

The analysis of the sociolinguistic integration of immigrant population
is one of the most interesting tasks of the 21st Century Sociolinguistics faces. These pages consider such analysis as its final object of study, with regard to some general targets and research tasks. The main purpose of this work is to create a reference theoretical frame to undertake the study of the sociolinguistic integration of the immigrant population in a reception community. This objective is considered previous to any other work on the field and to the proposal of other particular goals in relation to the process of sociolinguistic integration.

María Teresa Andruetto es actualmente una de las escritoras argentinas más estudiadas en el ámbito académico italiano en relación a la literatura de migración y los estudios de género. En esta entrevista indagamos acerca de la relación de la autora con la literatura italiana y con su ascendencia de inmigrantes, así como sus ideas sobre la escritura femenina y su experiencia como escritora proveniente del interior del país que, sin embargo, ingresó al circuito editorial italiano.

Este artículo propone un análisis de las representaciones visuales sobre indígenas e inmigrantes del Territorio Nacional del Chaco (Argentina), a partir de las huellas de enunciación y las narrativas visuales que se construyeron en/a través de la fotografía. Las lecturas actuales de ese corpus fotográfico, desde experiencias de recepción, permiten que el testimonio oral actualice las percepciones históricas. Con ello buscamos
explorar, por un lado, cómo es representado cada grupo socio-étnico y de qué modo esas representaciones se convierten en memorias visuales de sus comunidades. Por el otro, procuramos indagar sobre las correspondencias y/o contradicciones entre lo que las narrativas fotográficas
históricas (re)presentan, como referentes de memorias visuales, y lo que los receptores actuales identifican o (des)conocen, como parte de memorias identitarias en construcción, en una Provincia que desde el discurso político-cultural se busca mostrar como un crisol de razas.

This paper analyses the visual representations of indigenous and immigrants located on Territorio Nacional del Chaco (National Territory of Chaco), Argentina, based on traces of enunciation and visual narratives constructed in/ through photography. The current readings of this photographic material, from experiences of reception, allowed the updating of historical perceptions through the oral testimony.
In this way, we first explore how each ethnic group is represented and how these representations became visual memories of their communities. Furthermore, we search for correlations or contradictions between what the historical photographic narratives (re)presented, as references of visual memory, and what current receivers identify o do not acknowledge as part of their identities and memories under
construction, in a Province considered a melting pot by the political and cultural discourse.

RESUMEN: El cine español, desde sus inicios, se ha interesado por lo diferente, si bien hay que esperar hasta los años noventa para encontrar filmes que aborden de manera central la problemática de la inmigración. No obstante, muchas de esas películas están cargadas de estereotipos, fruto del miedo a «lo otro». Además, se observa una diferencia notable en el modo en que el cine construye al inmigrante y a la inmigrante, que suele ser reducida al papel de mera comparsa o acompañante silenciosa del varón, estrechamente vinculada al ámbito familiar y a los procesos de reagrupamiento; y, con demasiada frecuencia, aparece vinculada a la prostitución. Recientemente, la cinematográfica española ha producido varios filmes que rompen con estos estereotipos, en lo que se refiere al tratamiento del fenómeno migratorio en general, así como a la representación de la mujer inmigrante en particular. ABSTRACT: Ever since its inception, Spanish cinema has been interested in the different, although you have to wait until the nineties to find films that address the problem of immigration as a central subject. However, many of these films are full of stereotypes, which are the result of fear of «the other». In addition, a significant difference is observed in the way the film builds inmmigrants, since immigrant women are usually reduced to the role of mere stooge or silent companion of men, closely linked to the family regrouping processes; and, too often, they are linked to prostitution. Recently, Spanish cinema has produced several films that break these stereotypes, with regard to treatment of migration in general and the representation of immigrant women in particular.

The language should be defined in two forms, as mother language and main language; not only to see some migrants but also all of the “hybrid” peoples.  In fact duble mother tongues or bimotherlinguality is a reality. So, tongue and language must also be separated from each other. In that manner, ethnicity must be defined as a social issue, more than a given identity what relates to the language, gene, root, body, et, meat, root etc.  Hence, it was defined via three sub-dimensions, mother tongueism, reactionism and Pkkism (PKK kindness). Pkkism means to have positive attitudes on Pkk; whereas reactionism means to have negative opinions on surrounding environment, including central and local government, local inhabitants and so on. The later one also indicates positive attitudes on religion, and religious sects.
Secondly, urbanism should also be defined in two modes, indicating nativity and urbanism in itself. Nativity means be urban where the person’s original birth places. (The term nativity has no religious-Cristian notations) On the other hand, migrants, inmigrants, (means internal migrants), new-comers, foreigners and strangers similar nominations, can be more urban than the native habitants. Thus the later definition of urbanism, considering migration, means basically the citizenship whereas Modernism-Postmodernism and Occidentalism-Orientalism (means internalization of western interests as if  fighting against them or be neutral) still accept it as the nativity.
These elaborations are probably first and only ones in literature. Because, sociology works as “answer sociology” especially in Turkey.
In that frame of references, the basic problem of this study is to see the relation between ethnicity and citizenship more than only to explore the conditions as frequencies; as any public opinion survey necessarily does it. Thereafter, it is concluded that urbanization as nativity has no relation with any forms of ethnicity; but it has, as citizenship, relationship with mother tongueism and reactionism whereas they are negative. But it has positive relation with Pkkism although it has no significance.
However, migrants have also different characteristics on all of their life. They can be elaborated via the concepts of culture, urban culture, modernity and similar ones. There are roughly 360 questions and 610 answers, must also be understood as questions, that summed up in 109 tables in the book. So the book illustrates most of frequencies and relations with the three forms of ethnicity. For instance, forms of ethnicity have different relations with men’s and women’s swimming.  There are lots of information in the book as such.
Lastly, it should also be mentioned that, this book shows the results of a field study on ethnical Kurds, forced from their inherent homes, reached at Mersin-Turkey in 1996, stayed around HADEP, a pro-Kurdish Political Party. However, they are called as migrants since the basic problem is to elaborate them in the process of urbanization and citizenship. And they are called as Kurmanch (a sub-unit of Kurds) because they called their language as such.

The article investigate a micro-cosmos of 753 names of Syrian and Lebanese immigrants in Rio Grande do Sul state, selected from primary historical source at National Archives of Rio de Janeiro, whose files refer to the decree-law nº 406, ruled in 1938, making mandatory the registration of every foreign alien resident in the country. Looking into to the micro-cosmos of the so said 753 names of immigrant is easy to understand its limits in terms representing all the Arabs in Rio Grande do Sul but in the other hand it blanks drove us toward other sources as local historical literature and interviews with descendant.

actual, a partir del visionado de diferentes programas de televisión, noticiarios, películas, series de animación, etc. el público puede acceder a diversos contenidos y visiones del mundo. Sin embargo, hay que tener presente que estas visiones son construidas en base a ciertos principios que van a determinar los valores con los que definiremos posteriormente nuestra propia imagen del mundo y de ciertos fenómenos sociales como el de la inmigración.
En el siguiente artículo se pretende analizar cómo se representa al inmigrante latino dentro del territorio estadounidense, a partir de dos series de animación como lo son Family Guy y American Dad, ambas caracterizadas por su humor irónico. A partir del análisis de los diálogos, los argumentos y las imágenes de dichas series, se extraerán los valores sobre los que se construye el imaginario del inmigrante latino en EEUU.
Se deberá tener en cuenta en todo momento que ambas series
emplean como herramienta principal un humor irónico y satírico,
mediante el uso del cual pretenden establecer una crítica hacia diversos problemas sociales, atacando a todo lo políticamente correcto. Este hecho podría ser entendido como una crítica que mueve al público hacia una concienciación de los problemas sociales. No obstante, el uso de la ironía nos lleva a reflexionar sobre el verdadero poder del humor como arma transformadora en el ámbito de la ficción televisiva. Nos preguntamos hasta qué punto son adecuados los valores sobre los que se construye la imagen del inmigrante latino en estas series desde una visión irónica. Así pues, ¿la ironía es un arma efectiva para romper los estereotipos vigentes en la sociedad, o al usar los valores negativos existentes en el imaginario mediático y colectivo, se acaban perpetuando los estereotipos sobre el inmigrante latino?
