A company that seeks to achieve success, needs to invest in the efficiency of the people management whose development should gravitate according to the objectives of the organization and its own development and achievement. Thus, the new philosophies and methodologies are of great interest to companies. They seek to develop specific methodologies to measure the impact of the relationship between the individual's behavior with the task and evaluete the level of satisfaction in the work environment. This study empirically identifies the dimensions and initiates the development of a measure of emotional labor. Phase 1 of this project generated items for an exploratory questionnaire to which a broad sample of service workers responded (N = 358). Analysis revealed two dimensions of emotional labor: emotive effort, a construct never before identified in the emotional labor literature; and emotive dissonance, an acknowledged dimension that is further validated by this study. Several viable antecedent constructs of emotional labor also were identified and incorporated into an emerging model of emotional labor. In Phase 2, revised scales were administered to a second sample of service workers (N = 427) for reliability and validity purposes. Structural equation modeling also was used to establish relationships among emotional labor’s dimensions and various antecedent variables, facilitating development of a model of emotional labor.

Educational accountability must be applied as diligently to school boards as it is to superintendents, administrators, and teachers. Effective appraisal can take place only when performance is compared to objectives. The successful board demonstrates a commitment to providing public accountability in all phases of its operation. It must have the means to evaluate itself critically in terms of the quality of education funded by the taxpayer, the financial commitment to the taxpayer, the existence of effective employee and community relationships, and the management leadership demonstrated. Management by objectives (MBO), designed in the mid-20th century, is an effective and commonly used strategy managers can use to achieve objectives more efficiently than they could without MBO, but it comes with responsibilities they must follow.  MBO calls for strong leaders who are willing to discuss progress with their subordinates.  Although MBO is usually associated with autocratic leadership because of the nature of MBO, democratic leaders can also apply MBO.  Managers can use it in societal responsibility and in corporate social responsibility to meet the needs of the stakeholders and society at large.  MBO can also spark motivation, and incentives are necessary for MBO to be effective.  It encourages use of SMART and SMARTER goals, as they help organizations meet their objectives effectively.  Although MBO can be used for specific goals, it is a general management paradigm, commonly associated with strategic managers and can facilitate the difficulties present in strategic management.  Finally, it helps with total quality management (TQM) and new public management (NPM).

Management by objective allows management to focus on achievable goals and to attain the best possible result from available resources. It aims to increase organization performance by allying firm’s goals and subordinate objectives, throughout the organization. The study examines the effect of management by objectives (MBO) on organisation performance. This study adopted cross-sectional surveys. The sample size for this study was 288. The statistical tool used in this study was Kendall rank correlation coefficient. The results showed that objective setting is consider a critical issues that all employees should be involve in. The findings revealed that the sales revenue of this organization has improved significantly. It is recommended that management by objectives in its ideal form operates in such a way that for the corporate goals to be realized, manager should consult his subordinates in drawing up unit objectives, which goes up the hierarchy from where it is modified, collected, approved and distributed throughout the organization.

In recent years many companies have introduced self-regulatory teamwork requiring changes in leadership behaviour and systems as well. Consequently a renewed interest has arisen in management by objectives (MBO) as a means for leading selfregulating teams. But how do MBO systems work and how effective are they.' The MBO system of a company in the construction supply industry was analysed. This company had implemented MBO at team level five years ago. In order to explore the mechanisms and effects of MBO at team level a model for group goal selling was tested. One hundred and sevenly-six employees in twenty-six teams participaled in ihe study, bul only twentyone groups having objective productivity data were included in the analyses at team level. Group goal commitment and group goals moderated hy task interdependence are supposed to influence group processes as a mediating variable for group effectiveness. Resulls do not consistently support this model. Group goals and goal commitment predict group productivity and job satisfaction but group processes mediale only the relationship to job satisfaction. The moderating effect of task interdependence could not be supporled. The consequences for developing a model for MBO at team level and implementing cffeclive MBO systems are discu,ssed.

A study of general managers of 389 United States hotels found that 87 percent of the respondents conducted regular performance appraisals for all of their employees. This percentage is similar to that found in other industries. The most frequent interval for performance appraisals by lodging managers is once per year, also echoing the findings for other industries. Most managers used more than one type of appraisal and used their appraisals for more than one purpose. Nearly half used a management-by-objectives approach for their appraisals (49 percent), followed by behaviorally anchored rating scales (41 percent), narrative essays (37 percent), and graphic rating scales (28 percent). One negative note is that nearly 15 percent of the managers do not follow their appraisals with feedback sessions to review those appraisals. This article expands the hypothesis proposed by Peter F. Management by Objectives [MBO] is now a recognized management tool. Studies on MBO have focused on aspects of the process, including such fundamental components as goal setting, participation, and feedback (Rodgers & Hunter, 1991). However, the success of MBO also depends on effective implementation strategies (Stein, 1975). This paper examines the concept of MBO in a cross-cultural setting, using a postmortem study of goal setting and implementation among two groups of Chinese undergraduate management students in Guangzhou. ln addition, we reference a small study of goal setting by Chinese business school academics in Guangzhou and highlight the implementation strategies used by these groups in the pursuit of their goals because goal setting alone cannot guide either Chinese management students or academics in MBO in the light of the influence of the high-context Chinese culture. In China, one must consider the role of the supervisor (one's immediate manager or line supervisor) in MBO because the strength of social capital that binds supervisors and workers can affect a worker's level of perseverance and goal setting behaviour. In these circumstances, the supervisor's role is a determining factor in the success of MBO in Chinese settings.

The scheme briefly delineated here is an attempt to solve three important personnel problems in school district administration. How does one (1) evaluate administrators in a decentralized system: (2) clarify and reconcile personal and organizational goals to achieve accountability; and (3) provide detailed feedback on the consequences of administrative behavior in order to encourage change in ineffective behavior. The scheme depends on careful delineation of system goals, and on the annual development of written statements of personal goals by administrators. These are guided by agreement on major functions and by system goals. The statements must provide criteria for measuring achievement. They are discussed in planning sessions and refined and revised until acceptable both to the administrator concerned and the school district representative. The initial implementation revealed some practical difficulties, but more importantly suggested that theories that define organizations as goal-oriented systems are incomplete. Exchange cr cooperation-based theories seem to be essential adjuncts. The scheme seems to have some utility. At the very least, it may help administrators drowning in a sea of trivia to identify some high priority activities and allocate their time and effort more rationally than at present. PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to find out which contemporary management ideas have been implemented in Estonian business organizations and what are the differences between domestic and foreign companies in the field of management innovation.Design/methodology/approachExperts selected among management development approaches that were most frequently reflected in Harvard Business Review, Fortune Magazine and in the ProQuest database 8 direction that are most relevant for the survey in the transition economy context. The survey format is a qualitative questionnaire submitted to top managers in 141 Estonian enterprises.FindingsThe most frequently followed management development directions are balanced scorecard/management by objectives, supply chain management, learning organization, and total quality management. General differences between contemporary management directions in the domestic‐ and foreign‐owned companies researched are not significant. The initial hypothesis that contemporary management directions implemented in Estonian enterprises are mainly based on knowledge transfer by foreign enterprises or investors is not affirmed.Research limitations/implicationsBy using only a selection of management directions, it is not possible to draw final conclusions about the development process of management practice. The nature of the sample does not allow the authors to draw conclusions about all business sectors in Estonia.Practical implicationsThe results provide insight into the value of contemporary management directions for Estonian enterprises and enable the authors to make some forecasts about future management trends in Estonia depending on domestic and foreign ownership of enterprises that can be taken into consideration in management training programmes.Originality/valueThe paper provides an overview of innovations in management practice in a transition economy that has not been researched earlier by using a tool that operationalizes contemporary management directions.

Entrepreneurship has become increasingly important in the workplace. Research suggests motivational traits are important in pursuing entrepreneurial activities. Yet, the extent to which factors influencing entrepreneurial versus managerial goals differ remains unclear. This study assessed the influence of goal orientation and self-efficacy in predicting entrepreneurial and managerial career anchors development. Data from 158 college students indicated learning goal orientation (LGO) and performance-prove goal orientation (PPGO) predicted entrepreneurial career anchors when coupled with high self-efficacy. For managerial goals, self-efficacy did not influence these relationships. Findings suggest providing opportunities for increased self-efficacy and adaptive goal orientations may affect entrepreneurial development.

Management by objectives is intrinsic to the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) and Swedish environmental policy. We describe three approaches to formulating objectives via model-assisted dialogue with local stakeholders concerning eutrophication in a coastal drainage area in southeastern Sweden: a WFD eco-centred approach based on 'natural state'; Swedish environmental policy reformulated into quantified reduction goals; and a participatory approach based on local stakeholder definitions of desirable environmental status. Despite problems with representation, we conclude that local stakeholder participation in formulating local goals could increase goal functionality and robustness when adapting and implementing national and EU WFD goals at the local level.

The balanced scorecard (BSC) has attracted considerable interest among organizations seeking to improve the implementation of their strategy.
