In today's business transactions, there are various reasons, namely, bulk purchase discounts, re-ordering costs, seasonality of products, inflation induced demand, etc., which force the buyer to order more than the warehouse capacity. Such situations call for additional storage space to store the excess units purchased. This additional storage space is typically a rented warehouse. Inflation plays a very interesting and significant role here: It increases the cost of goods. To safeguard from the rising prices, during the inflation regime, the organisation prefers to keep a higher inventory, thereby increasing the aggregate demand. This additional inventory needs additional storage space, which is facilitated by a rented warehouse. Ignoring the effects of the time value of money and inflation might yield misleading results. In this study, a two-warehouse inventory model with linear trend in demand under inflationary conditions having different rates of deterioration has been developed. Shortages at the owned warehouse are also allowed subject to partial backlogging. The solution methodology provided in the model helps to decide on the feasibility of renting a warehouse. Finally, findings have been illustrated with the help of numerical examples. Comprehensive sensitivity analysis has also been provided.

The changing global market scenario, high level of competition, and faster obsolescence of perishable products due to short self life and changing customer demand are among the key challenges faced by perishable supply chains. Supply chains need to compete with growing variety of products, short delivery time, higher cycle service level, high quality and lower cost. Perishability imposes an intense pressure on managers as it adds an additional cost of disposal of outdated items, leading to out-of-stock situations and also loss of company faith. These problems are arising mostly due to the lack of information at every stage of the supply chains. The inadequate information about product quality, quantity, demand variability, product availability and lead times creates the bullwhip effect (BWE) at all stages and chains leads to the mismanagement. RFID technologies, with the appropriate IT infrastructure, would help major distributors and manufacturers, as well as health-care system, defence industries, and global supply chains in which products and product shipments must be traced and identified in a non-contact, wireless fashion using a computer network. This paper presents the impact of RFID in warehouse management of perishable products. It provides mathematical framework to asses the benefits of RFID in warehouse management. It helps management in the variety of ways including improvement in receiving and shipping processes, reduction in cycle counting efforts, reduction in stock outs/excess inventory, decreased counterfeiting, decreased returns, and reduction in inventory loss due to shrinkage and obsolescence. A sensitivity analysis has been presented at the end of paper which shows the compound effect of RFID, reduction in lead time and lead time variability. In all scenarios inventory level is reduced by certain percentage by incorporating RFID.

RESUMO. O conhecimento armazenado ao longo dos anos nas bases de dados organizacionais é um bem vital para a sobrevivência de uma empresa neste mercado competitivo. Para a sua efetiva utilização como apoio ao processo decisório de uma organização, os dados precisam estar organizados de uma forma que possibilite o seu acesso rápido e fácil entendimento. According to Customs and local tax legislations it is possible to store import and export goods, which are not in free circulation, in bonded warehouses without paying import duties or revenue taxes or VAT or commercial policy measures under the guarantee of Turkish Customs Offices. There is no limit storage time expiry for the goods in bonded warehouses.

The industrial macroeconomic environment in which companies are developed today is characterized by being highly demanding and competitive. Success or failure depends not only on the ability to adapt to market requirements, but also on the efficiency level of the applied practices. In this sense, the increase in productivity in warehouse operations has a direct influence on the optimization of logistic processes in the company, thus giving a competitive advantage. After studying the stock behavior using different criteria for ABC analysis, this paper proposes and analyzes different layout alternatives for reducing times and distances in warehouse activities, while increasing the storage capacity of the warehouse compared to the current situation. The present work is implemented on a real case study with specific conditions in the finished product warehouse of a glass packaging factory. A set of indicators was developed in order to evaluate the performances of the suggested layouts. Other suggestions on systems and division in zones of warehouse layout are presented in an attempt to increase productivity in warehouse processes.

En la década de 1970, Murra propuso investigar los derivados posttawantinsuyu del sistema inka de almacenes (qullka) mediante el estudio del término colonial «sapçi». Tanto en el texto de Guaman Poma (1615) como en el manuscrito quechua de Huarochirí (1608) utilizan este vocablo oscuro para denominar lo almacenado para uso comunal. Hoy, los mismos pueblos donde se recogieron las narrativas de Huarochirí poseen edificios llamados collcas; ellas contienen depósitos parecidos al que Guaman Poma dibujó bajo el nombre de sapçi. Las observaciones etnográficas (1994-2001) en la collca de Tupicocha sugieren que los sistemas modernos de almacenamiento guardaron similitudes con el sapçi, y en menor grado, con la qullka, hasta el siglo XX. Al igual que el almacenamiento inka, la collca se asocia con los khipus. De similar manera que el sapçi colonial, la collca fusiona dentro de su arquitectura el almacenamiento y la estructura central del pueblo nucleado en forma de reducción toledana. También hay parecido con el sapçi de Guaman Poma en cuanto que la collca administra bienes intracomunales en vez de servir al sector estatal. El régimen ritual que gobierna la collca, y que ha permitido frecuentes cambios en su diseño y sus funciones, puede ofrecer una analogía etnográfica relevante tanto a los casos inka como colonial.

In this paper we present a real-world case study involving the re-location of a combined manufacturing and distribution (warehousing) facility. This research proposes a Pareto-based multi-objective optimization approach to class-based storage warehouse design, considering a two-block warehouse that operates under the class-based storage policy in a low-level, picker-to-part and narrow aisle warehousing system. A mathematical model is formulated to determine the number of aisles, the length of aisle and the partial length of each pick aisle to allocate to each product class that minimizes the travel distance and maximizes the usable storage space. A solution approach based on multiple objective particle swarm optimization is proposed to find the Pareto front of the problems. Numerical examples are given to show how to apply the proposed algorithm. The results from the examples show that the proposed algorithm can provide design alternatives to conflicting warehouse design decisions.

Kazan is the capital of Tatarstan, a modern and visionary town, where it will be possible to design and develop an advanced and innovative agribusiness infrastructure and where to introduce the concept of "Hub" in the housing and in the distribution of food. The main concepts exploited in this project are modularity, standardization and use of ICT facilities. The module will be the pallet, the standard the Euro Pallet and the warehouse class A and, as regards ICT devices, the RFID equipment and the satellite control.

Isparta ili Türkiye’de soğuk hava depolarının yoğunluk kazandığı illerin başında
gelmektedir. Bunun en önemli sebebi Isparta’nın coğrafi özelliklerinin başta elma, kiraz, erik
olmak üzere birçok çeşit meyvenin yetiştirilmesine uygun olmasıdır. Özellikle elma ekonomik
anlamda depolamaya çok uygun bir meyvedir. Nitekim Isparta ilinde soğuk hava depolarının
yoğunluk kazanmasında elmanın bol miktarda yetişiyor olmasının etkisi büyüktür. Aynı şekilde
yeni ve modern depoların kurulması da elmacılık faaliyetinin gelişmesinde etkili olmuştur.
Bilindiği üzere yetiştirilen ürünün soğuk hava depolarında uzun süre depolanabilir olması bu
ürünün ticari değerini arttırmaktadır. Ürünün ticari değerinin artması, özellikle meyvecilik
tarımı yapan kır nüfusunun ekonomik gelir düzeyini yükseltmekte, bu yolla soğuk hava depoları
kırsal kalkınmada etkili bir faktör olmaktadır. Bu çalışmada öncelikle soğuk hava deposu
kavramı, dünyada ve Türkiye’de soğuk hava depoculuğunun gelişimi üzerinde durulmuştur.
Daha sonra Isparta ilinde ilk soğuk hava deposunun inşasından günümüze kadar geçen süreçte
depoculuğun gelişimi, soğuk hava depolarının il bazında dağılışı ve bu dağılışa etki eden
faktörler irdelenmiştir. Soğuk hava depoları ile ilgili mevcut bilgiler eksik ve yetersizdir. Bu
bağlamda Isparta ili genelinde sağlıklı veriler oluşturulmuş ve bundan sonra yapılacak
araştırmalara bir kapı aralanmıştır. Soğuk hava depolarının kırsal kalkınmaya kırsal refaha
etkileri bu çalışmanın bir sonraki aşaması olarak görülmektedir.

The formulation of Inventory models is often done with the presumption that all items produced are of perfect quality in nature. However, in real-life scenarios, the lot that arrives in inventory includes a fraction of imperfect quality items due to faulty production or mishandling of goods. It is also a misconception that the goods preserve their characteristics during their presence in the inventory .Thus, these assumptions need to be rectified in the planning/preparation of inventory models. In order to reduce the losses due to deterioration, at times, the retailer is forced to rent other warehouses (RW) with better preserving facilities, owing to the lack of facilities in his own warehouse (OW). The retailer may also rent warehouses voluntarily to store excessive goods that have been obtained at a discounted price or in order to avoid inflation rates. The present research paper is, thus, an attempt to incorporate the aforementioned concepts to develop a new inventory model with two warehouses: for goods that have a fraction of imperfect quality items and those that are deteriorating in nature. The study also states the developed mathematical model along with the solution procedure. Further, the sensitivity analysis of the optimal solution with respect to key parameters of the inventory system has also been performed to develop the managerial insights.

Warehouses are usually large, plain industrial buildings commonly used for storage of goods. Vertical distribution of air temperature is an important aspect for indoor environment design, which must be taken into account by architects and engineers in the early stages of warehouse design. The aim of this work is to analyze the vertical temperature gradients existing in warehouses, quantifying their value and analyzing their evolution along the year. To do so, the study outlines the monitoring of several warehouses with different building typology and height located in different areas of Spain for a complete annual cycle. The results obtained when applying a simple linear regression analysis to 175,200 vertical temperature profiles show that there is a strong influence of the outdoor temperature over the stratification of the indoor air. During warm months, the ceiling and the upper strata get warmer, whereas the cold air accumulates in the lower levels, increasing the stratification of indoor air (maximum values between 0.3 °C/m and 0.7 °C/m). During cold months, the ceiling gets cold due to its contact with the outdoor air, therefore, the colder, heavier air moves down to the lower strata, registering insignificant vertical temperature differences. Air conditioning of the warehouse, besides controlling the temperature, limits the influence of the outdoor environment on the stratification of temperatures. The results of the study may be of great use for warehouses for products sensitive to temperature, which may suffer a different evolution, conservation or maturation when the temperature differences are maintained for a long time.

Depending on the type of goods and storage facilities available, perishable goods decay in different manners in terms of the initial point and rate of deterioration. The three-parameter Weibull distribution is an excellent generalization of exponential decay, with the flexibility of modeling various types of deteriorations. Since inventory management of perishable goods involves expensive storage facilities, the retailer with small storage may have to rent a warehouse. In this paper, we discuss a two-warehouse inventory model where deteriorations in the two warehouses follow independent three-parameter Weibull distributions. Transfer of units is from the rented warehouse to the own warehouse, and incurs a positive cost per unit. Demand is a non-decreasing linear function of time, shortages are backlogged and replenishment is instantaneous. A solution procedure for obtaining optimal values of initial inventory level and cycle time is presented. Sensitivity analysis is carried out. The effect of using other related deterioration distributions is illustrated.

Results from a study on load handling in two warehouses are presented. The loads were mainly handled with the back bent and in twisted postures. The so-called 'correct lifting' method was rare. The dimensional constraints of storing systems and the influence of the environment and load characteristics on handling strategies are described. As a conclusion, it is proposed that training in lifting skills should be replaced by training in manual handling in general , and by ergonomic improvements.

The GUARDIANS multi-robot team is to be deployed in a large warehouse in smoke. The team is to assist firefighters search the warehouse in the event or danger of a fire. The large dimensions of the environment together with development of smoke which drastically reduces visibility, represent major challenges for search and rescue operations. The GUARDIANS robots guide and accompany the firefighters on site whilst indicating possible obstacles and the locations of danger and maintaining communications links.

This paper examines Warehouse Management System (WMS) practices and their effects on operations. This study analyses the relationship between adoption of WMS to its impacts on business performance and competitive advantage of a regional distribution centre. In terms of business performance, the focus is placed on various competitive cores of distribution centre. WMS was found has a positive impact on companies' performance on operations management measures. To adopt the MIS, wireless barcode embedded WMS in specific, it is necessary to have corporate culture that supports complex operational activities. WMS implementation is crucial in bringing cost reduction in operational level, effective management in management level, as well as improvement of the company's competitiveness in strategic level. Companies that manage warehousing of their products are expected to implement WMS in order to maintain their competitive edge in the global market place.

We develop a two-warehouse production model with imperfect items. Production rate is taken as the linear combination of on-hand inventory and demand, while demand rate is taken as function of time. Most of the researchers consider that the production rate is independent from the demand rate. In this paper we assume production rate as being dependent on the demand rate, and this assumption is more realistic. Shortages are allowed and partially backlogged with time-dependent backlogging rate. Due to different preservation facilities we consider that the deterioration rate is time dependent in own warehouse (OW) and Weibull distribution deterioration in rented warehouse (RW). Holding cost in RW is greater than in OW. We developed a fuzzy model with fuzzifying all the costs of the model as triangular fuzzy numbers. The present model is developed in both crisp and fuzzy senses. Finally, numerical example is shown, and sensitivity is also illustrated.

This paper studies how to sequence a group (or block) of storage and retrieval requests in a multi-deep automated storage system with the objective to minimize the makespan. We adapt well-known sequencing heuristics for the multi-deep system, and propose and evaluate a new heuristic: percentage priority to retrievals with shortest leg (PPR-SL). Our results show the PPR-SL heuristic consistently outperforms all the other heuristics. Generally, it can outperform the benchmark first-come first-served (FCFS) heuristic by 20-70%. The nearest neighbor (NN) heuristic that performs very well in conventional single-deep storage systems, appears to perform poorly in the multi-deep system; even worse than FCFS. In addition, based on FCFS and PPR-SL, we find robust rack dimensions yielding a short makespan, regardless of the number of storage and retrieval requests. This research presents analysis and demonstration of the application of code-division multiple access (CDMA) to radio frequency identification (RFID), particularly for the simultaneous reading of multiple RFID tags. The research investigates current techniques and algorithms for resolving collisions among multiple tags while they are transmitting simultaneously. Typical store and warehouse environments under possible worst-case scenarios have been studied. The result of this research is the recommended implementation of a CDMA RFID method of reducing the number of reads and the removal of some intertag interference.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of persons employed increased as nearly nine hundred thousand in November 2016, which implies the fact that demands of warehouses will increase in keeping with the growth of logistics industry. However, the necessity for energy savings was recognized as less important because the average energy use intensity of warehouses in the US was 55% and 70% less than those of office buildings and retail stores, respectively. Also, the improvement of indoor thermal environment for workers was often overlooked in comparison with safety, speed, and space efficiency. This research proposes a study for a warehouse building to mitigate both thermal dissatisfaction and energy use through the network based real-time analysis. In order to optimize heating and cooling supply , an algorithm for simultaneous control of the amount of air and its temperature is designed, and a neural network model that learns the algorithm is generated. Also, an inner algorithm for thermal comfort analyses real-time temperature levels and rectifies the model's control signals to mitigate thermal dissatisfaction. By comparing results, this research concludes advantages of a neural network model with estimating thermal comfort. The model reduces thermal dissatisfaction by 21.2% and saves energy use by 6.4% in comparison with the conventional thermostat on/off controller equipped in most buildings. Without compromising thermal comfort for workers, the proposed model that consists of two independent structures for optimizing supply air and estimating thermal comfort can contribute to the improvement of thermal performance for warehouses.

In today's business transactions, there are various reasons, namely, bulk purchase discounts, re-ordering costs, seasonality of products, inflation induced demand, etc., which force the buyer to order more than the warehouse capacity. Such situations call for additional storage space to store the excess units purchased. This additional storage space is typically a rented warehouse. Inflation plays a very interesting and significant role here: It increases the cost of goods. To safeguard from the rising prices, during the inflation regime, the organisation prefers to keep a higher inventory, thereby increasing the aggregate demand. This additional inventory needs additional storage space, which is facilitated by a rented warehouse. Ignoring the effects of the time value of money and inflation might yield misleading results. In this study, a two-warehouse inventory model with linear trend in demand under inflationary conditions having different rates of deterioration has been developed. Shortages at the owned warehouse are also allowed subject to partial backlogging. The solution methodology provided in the model helps to decide on the feasibility of renting a warehouse. Finally, findings have been illustrated with the help of numerical examples. Comprehensive sensitivity analysis has also been provided.
