Pinterest is a popular Web application that has over 250 million active users. It is a visual discovery engine for finding ideas for recipes, fashion, weddings, home decoration, and much more. In the last year, the company adopted Semantic Web technologies to create a knowledge graph that aims to represent the vast amount of content and users on Pinterest, to help both content recommendation and a
PREMIS is based on a data model that defines the entities that are described (Objects, Events, Agents and Rights), the properties of those entities (semantic units), and relationships between them. The PREMIS OWL ontology provides an RDF encoding reflecting that model. This revised version replaces the earlier PREMIS OWL ontology, which was based on version 2.2. The PREMIS OWL Ontology Revision W

OWL Ontologies and SKOS Vocabularies for Linked Models of Industry and Government Standards What is "Linked Models" Linked Models will be a site for publishing RDF/OWL models of commonly used industry and government standards. The work is motivated by the desire to use Semantic Web Technologies for interoperability, information aggregation and validation of specifciations that have been created us
In a previous post, I've shown that the XALAN XSLT engine can be extended with custom function returning a DOM Document that will be used by the xslt-stylesheet. Here, I'll create an extension for XALAN getting some RDF statements from a Jena/RDF model. The RDF model will be loaded in memory but one can imagine to use a persistent model ( TDB or SDB). I'll download a record from NCBI-gene, transfo
In a nutshell, what is OWL Horst reasoning compared to other types of reasoning? Where does it fit on the expressivity vs performance scale? How does it compare to, say, the reasoner choices in Jena? How popular is it? How necessary is it if you have one or more other types of reasoning available to you in a reasoner? In formal circles, OWL Horst is called pD*. You'll see it called the former by i
Mapping relational databases to RDF is a fundamental problem for the development of the Semantic Web. We present a solution, inspired by draft methods defined by the W3C where relational databases are directly mapped to RDF and OWL. Given a relational database schema and its integrity constraints, this direct mapping produces an OWL ontology, which, provides the basis for generating RDF instances.
WebPIE (Web-scale Parallel Inference Engine) is a MapReduce distributed RDFS/OWL inference engine written using the Hadoop framework. This engine applies the RDFS and OWL ter Horst rules and it materializes all the derived statements. WebPIE encodes Semantic Web reasoning as a set of Map and Reduce operations, tapping on the power of the MapReduce programming model for performance, fault-tolerance
