Many scientists believe that the first human beings evolved in eastern Africa around 200,000 years ago. Africa is home to many large wild animals like giraffes, lions, elephants, cheetahs. From the late 19th century, European countries colonized almost all of Africa. After World War 2, the colonies started gaining independence and now all African countries are independent. Africa is the poorest continent with at least 30% of its people living on less than $1 per day. Experts say poverty has many causes and economic progress varies between countries.
