I can see how this cost $320 million, but what I cannot figure out is why? There just wasn't a reason to spend that much money on this. Although it's not as structurally impeccable as Fellowship of the Ring, it has so many incredible individual moments and sequences, from the lighting of the beacons to the Ride of the Rohirrim to the last stand of Men to several dozen others, that I can't help but like it the most.
