 CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Being in a situation where student in private school transferred by parents

to a public school is hard. A student in private school will notice a big difference

from public school students, and it is not easy to adjust from the new

environment surrounds. They feel the dynamic environment and they see public

schools have a populated student. Various study identified the transition

challenges like transfer preparation, academic adjustment, and social

environment as stated by Townsend (2010). These challenged provide the basis

for how transferee student transitioned and experienced.

Private school students who transferred to public school may experience

lack of chair and books so that, they can’t easily adopt and it can be stressful for

students. Also because of transferring, some students withdrawn to their school

and cause this to have a failing grades. According to Puschner (2010) prompting

many local parents to send their children to private school instead of transitioning

their students to public school, due to lack of rooms and high population of

students.

The importance of this study is to know the life experience of students

transferred from private school to public school. Also to know the common

reason of parents why they transfer their children to public school and to know on

how they cope up with the challenge of being a transferee students.

 II. Review of Related Literature

This study deal with several related literature and studies taken from

various standard sources. These lifted pieces of literature sustained the

researchers study. The literature assess the various challenges of transitioning

from private to public schools. The following chapter provide a comprehensive

look at the various research findings on transitioning in public schools.

Causes of Students from Private School Transitioning to Public School

The inability of students to transitioning into another school caused some

of them to withdraw from school. They can’t adopt to their environment because

some of the students have failing grades due to academic performance. Private

school students who transferred to public school have difficulty to adapt because

it can be the source of instability and stress of students, student can't easily

acclimate their new environment Anderson (2012).

According to Eccles (2010) students who switch schools are more likely to

demonstrate a wide array of negative behavioral and education outcomes. It may

be the cause by the same cycle of disengagement that lead the students to

failure, the possibility that switching schools may be cause by the same cycle of

disengagement that leads student to failed. Therefore, regardless of the level of

preparation a transfer students may have their transition into the new

environment of the institution will cause a certain level of stress. Transitioning is

perceived by individual to be positive or negative Antoine & Ali (2016).

Additionally, individuals perceptions of the transition is critical, as it will influence

ones feeling and the method they will utilize to cope with the transition. It is the

individual that gives meaning to the transition, the level of challenge and the

specific ways to cope Anderson (2012).

Effects of Students from Private School Transitioning to Public School

Most transferees withdraw to school because they can’t adopt to their

surroundings/environment easily. Due to hard-time adopting to their new school

environment this may affect the students to have failing grades because of their

academic performance in school. Estimating the effect of switching schools on

dropout is a difficult task or this may be the way of the parents why their children

has been transferred from catholic schools (private) to public schools to avoid the

high tuition fee. The effect of a transition such us school mobility works differently

across students, depending on their initial risk for changing schools. Transition

can either be internally created or forced upon the individual by external factors

Valdes (2018).

For transfer students, internal factors can include: the students level of

preparedness for the academic demand of the new institution, the confidence

that a students may have with navigating the new environment, and their ability

to engage with the social environment Eccles (2010). External factors that may

affect a transfer students include obligation that may limit the time a students

may have to dedicate to academics. A transition may be beyond to scope of

one’s control, the response to it may not be. Regardless of the effect a transition

may have, part of the process of moving through a transition is “letting go

aspects of the self” and disengaging with the former roles to learn new ones.

Additionally an individual will always face stress Anderson (2012)

Struggles of Private School Students who transferred to Public School

Transfer students face various challenges that hinder their transitions and

academic progress. These challenges are often the result of various factors

within the campus environment that impact their experiences and perceptions,

other issues affecting students adjustments include performance and learning

new rules and procedures Anderson (2012). The process of transferring from one

school to another may have a negative impact on academic, despite the age of

the student Townsend (2010). The students who transferred from private to

public schools will be a struggle, it may take a long time to adapt the environment

surroundings and need to achieve as soon as possible. Adjusting to the new

school location could be also a struggle for students from private.

According to Townsend (2013) one of the biggest adjustment on the

transition from private to public was a social aspect, another difference is

extracurricular activities. Private schools is more advance than public schools, so

that students feel something new on their surroundings or activity. Public school

is very crowded because of the population of student and it is very noisy and may

struggle the students. Student’s attitude towards school and performance decline

during transition due to changes in how they viewed themselves and their

abilities as learners Eccles, Wigfield & Iver (2010). Students may have to cope

with the new chaotic stresses. Therefore, understanding the student experiences

at their prior institution is critical to understand fully in their perceptions of their

transitioning in public school and the challenges and benefits they experience at

school.

Experiences of Private School Students who choose to transferred in

Public School

According to Ecless, Wigfield & Iver (2010) emphasizing that students

move into a more competitive school environment, they acquire negative feeling

about the school and themselves; hence, they experience academic difficulties,

unaware of their strengths in relation to their peers, they eventually experience

lower self-esteem and detach themselves.

Galton & Grey (2011) discovered that students experience a hiatus in

academic performance after they transfer, later studies found that schools were

concentrating more on the academic dimension of transition rather than the

social aspects in order to strengthen academic progress. Some students

experience transferring to a new school and also deferent house location.

Accommodating their self to someone they want to talk with but it’s a hard-time in

making friends.

Moreover to Puschner (2010) stated that students may experience very

limited opportunities in making new friends and people. Individual’s prior

experience with a transition affects how they perceive a similar transition on how

they will cope with their stress.

In addition, Anderson (2012) states the effects of a pre-existing stress,

which may either influence or cause another stress event. The studies have also
identified various themes from the transfer, the experiences of the students that

have influenced their transitions, which includes transfer preparation, academic

adjustments, poor academic advising, financial concern, faculty interaction,

classroom size and social environment according to Ishitnai & McKitrick (2010).

Involvement of the individual experiencing the change, the environment of the

transition, and the relationship between them is necessary to cope with change

Anderson (2012).

III. Scope and Limitations

The goal of this study is to know how they can handle the situation when

they transfer into public school, adjust in a new surroundings which the students

would have a greater opportunity to think outside the square with the help of

input from other students and guidance from their teacher.

This only limits to honor students of Junior High students at Libertad

National High School.

IV. Statement of the Problem

This study aims to know how the students can handle the situation when

they transfer to public schools.

Thus, the following question are given:

1. What are the life experiences of students from private school transferred

to public school?

2. What do they feel about their situation?

 3. How do they adjust with their surroundings?

CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the overall approach of the researchers and

its objectives. It describes the participants and the site of the study and the

sampling technique used. It also discuss the role and responsibilities of

the researchers. The data gathering procedures and in addition this

chapter will also show the process on how the researchers established

credibility.

Research Design

The researchers used unstructured interview in collection of the

data. The researcher’s participants were interviewed via face to face

technique. The researchers prepare a questions in avoidance of the use of

discriminatory and offensive language but the freedom to ask additional

follow up questions if it is necessary. The approach of the interview was

for the safety of the participants. The researchers conducted a qualitative

research method using a phenomenological approach. According to De

Franzo, (2011) qualitative research is primarily exploratory research. It is

used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and

motivations. Since research aimed at finding out the sentiments or

perspectives of those people who actually experienced of the said

phenomenon, phenomenological approach was being applied to the study.

The phenomenological method aims to describe, understand and interpret

 the meanings of experiences of human life. It focuses on the research

questions being experience a certain phenomenon. The objectives of the

study are to understand students who experienced transition from private

school to public school.

Data Gathering

The interview and data collection was conducted at Libertad

National High School – Junior High School located at Libertad, Butuan

City.

The researchers applied the availability sampling for this study,

from selected sections purposive sampling is being used in collecting

data. This strategy method includes collecting data from the selected

students who are accessible. There were ten (10) numbers of participants

for this study.

CHAPTER III

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

This chapter presents the interpretation and analysis of the respondents

answer on the research question based on the individual interview done by the

researchers with the participants, the following themes developed for the study;

Financial Problem, Hard time adopting in new environment, Difficulty in dealing

new classmates, Accepting the truth, Low self-esteem.

 Theme No.1: Financial Problem. Most common reason of parents why

they had to transfer their children to public school it is because they cannot afford

financially due to rising cost of tuition fee in private school. This is stated that by

Participant A “I have no choice but to accept that I will be transferred to public

school because of the financial problem”. (ako nalang gidawat kay wala man koy

choice kay wala naman kwarta si mama ug papa). Participant E and F stated that

“I am just accepting the fact that my parents cannot afford financially. (gidawat

nako kay ang akoang parents kay nagkalisud sa kwarta).

Theme No.2: Hard time adopting in new environment. If you are a new

student the most common problem of a student may face is dealing with the new

environment/surroundings. This are stated by Participants G and J "at first I feel

nervous and felt different in the new surroundings”. (Sa pinakauna nahadlok

pako kay ako raman isa ato wala koy kaila ug nabag.ohan kos palibot nako).

Participant I stated that “I was shock seeing so much students". (Na shock ko kay

naanad man jud ko nga gamay ra ang studyante sa private).

Theme No. 3: Difficulty in dealing new classmates. Some students are

dealing difficulty in having new classmates, it is because they cannot conquer

their fair or shyness and this is the cause for some students to have hard time

making new friends. This are stated by Participants A, F and G that "It is hard for

me to approach them at but then I conquer my fear and started a conversation

with my new classmates”. (Maulawon man ko nga pagkatao pero kabalo ko

makipag amigo so nag adjust gyud ko ug gi istoryahan gyud nako ako katapad.)
 Theme No. 4: Accepting the truth. Due to lack of money some students

are forced to accept the reality they are in right now. This is stated by Participant

D that "I accept the fact that I just want to go to school”. (Gi accept lang nako kay

ang importante maka skwela ko.). Participant E stated that "My parents don’t

have the required income to pay”.(kadto laging walay kwarta akoang parents kay

walay pang bayad). Participant J stated that "I accept the fact that my parents

don’t have money".( gi accept nako siya kay tungod akoang parents walay

kwarta.)

Theme No. 5: Low self-esteem. Students who have low self-esteem may

have hard time dealing new classmates. This are stated by Participants C and I

that “I accepted the fact that I started a conversation first even it is hard for me”.

(Akoy nakipag start ug conversation sa ilaha bisag kulba pero wala gyud ko nag

paulaw-ulaw). Participant J stated that “I accept the facts that even its hard for

me I strengthen myself for the sake of making new friends". (Gi accept nako siya

biskan ug lisud mo sabay ko sa mga gara-gara nila para lang maka amigo ko).

From the responses of the participants, it was found out that financial

problem is the most common reason of a parent why they had to transfer their

children to public school it is because they cannot afford financially. Among the

data we gathered, parents transfer their children from private to public school is

to avoid high tuition fee. According to Anderson (2012) one of the reason why

parents transferred their children to public school it is because of the rising cost

of education. Transition can either be internally created or forced upon the

individual by external factors Valdes (2018).

 Hard time adopting in new environment is also a common problem to

students, it was found out that students can't easily acclimate their new

environment Anderson (2012). Additionally, individual’s perception of the

transition is critical, as it will influence once feeling and the method they will

utilize to cope with the transition, the level of challenges and the specific ways to

cope Anderson (2012). External factors that may affect a transfer students

It was found out that students are having difficulty in dealing new

classmates because according to Townsend (2013) one of the biggest

adjustments on transitioning from private to public school is social aspect. It was

found out also that students who have low self-esteem may have hard time

dealing new classmates towards school and performance decline during

transition due to changes in how they viewed themselves and their abilities as

learners Eccles, Wigfield & Iver (2010). Additionally an individual will always face

stress Anderson (2012). Antoine and Ali (2016) it was found out that transitioning

is perceived by individual to be positive or negative. Other issues affecting

student’s adjustments include performance and learning new rules and

procedure Anderson (2012).

CHAPTER IV

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

CONCLUSION

In conclusion of understanding the views and opinions of the respondents and

the findings of this research that transitioning from private school to public school

affect the academic performance of a students and the performance during

classes. And parents should always ask their children first if they like it to be

transferred in public school or not, if not asked it may be the cause of students to

have low grades and poor academic performance.

RECOMMENDATION

As a researcher of this research we highly recommend to future

researchers if they will be going to conduct the same study we recommend to

study more of the challenges of students and to study how to overcome these

challenges easily. We encourage the future researchers to take the study on

these fields.

Participant A:

- I have no choice but to accept that I will be transferred to public school (Ako

nalang gidawat kay waman koy choice kay wala man kwarta sa mama ug papa)
 - I dint like it at first because of the numerous requirements and a lot of stuff that

needs to be complied (wako ganahi kay wala ko na anad sa public school din

daghay palitonon sa public school)

- They approach me first and I introduce myself to them (Sila ang ni doul nako

kay 1 week ko ato wala sa first day din nagpa ila-ila dayun ko)

- I accepted it with all my heart

- By approaching them first and introducing myself

- I just get along with them

- I accepted it with all my heart because of the situation we were facing at the

moment (gi-dawat nako siya sa akoang tibuok kasing-kasing tungod sa

- I honestly felt scared because I don’t have friends in anhs but on the other hand

I was also excited to meet new people

- I just waved them and then I smiled and they responded politely with a “Hi”

- At first I was frail because I didn’t have friends yet but in the long run I manage

to have friends (At first kay kanang naluya ko kay wala koy friends pero

nagkadugay naka amigo na dayun ko )

- Because of the group activities I meet a lot of friends (Sa mga classmates nako

nag start kanang group activities didtoa naka friends dayun ko)

- I accepted it later on (Ok ran a accept ra nako kadugayan)

- I approach them and I started a conversation about my interest (Ni duol ko sa

- I accept it whole heartedly because for me the important is to go to school and

- I felt alone and sad because I was separated to my friends (Gi bati kog ka kulba

kay wala koy friends)

 - Iam a shy type person but I know how to find new friends (Shy type man nga

pagkatao pero I know kamao ko makipag friends)

- It’s okay even I came from private school I want to experience how fun is public

atmosphere and not so crowded (Na shock ko okay naanad man jud ko nga

gamay ray students din hilom ra)

- When I introduce myself and that way I meet new friends (Kananga no lang pag

- It’s okay, I accepted tha Iam a transferred student (Ok ra gi accept lang nako

nga nakabalhin ko)

- I accept it because my parents have no money to enroll me to private school (Gi

dawat nako kay walay kwarta si mama ug papa na epa enroll kos private)

- I was nervous at first because Iam still adjusting to the new sorrounding

(Nakulbaan pako at first din nabagohan ko sa sorroundings nako)

- I approach first then I joined their lunch and then we introduce our selves (Ni

doul rakog kalit din nakisabay ug lunch din nakipag ila-ila)

- I accepted it because my parents don’t have money (Gi accept lang nako siya

kay tungod walay kwarta akoa mama ug papa)

- They approach me first because Iam a shy type person (Kanang sila ang ni
