Subject: problem I observed in Adama Science and Technology University
Introductory summary
As we learn in Adama Science and Technology University from fresh man up to 4 th year first semester we encountered different types of problem. However, with the help of God and our ability to face the problem we stand those difficult situations during academic years. During the years as I mentioned above we have finished the teaching and learning process as we possible, but some necessary portioned are not appropriately covered. Although there were some problems should be solved before the university accepts fresh man student at the coming academic year. This report highlights the problems so that they can be brought to the staff members of Adama Science and Technology University. Those staff members not only the administration staff but also from the gate guard up to the university’s president, Dr. Lemi Guta. My suggestions focus on some areas of problem of Adama Science and Technology University: discrimination based on language, shortage of drinking water, disruption of students on academic years, Wi-Fi accessibility, student approach to their lecturer, deteriorated computers in the laboratory.
Discrimination based on language
We know that as declared in our constitution, the working language of Ethiopia is Amharic but this declaration is applicable some parts of Ethiopia. In Adama Science and Technology University language discrimination is enhances from time to time. When we were fresh man this types of problem was little bit small but the year increase from 1 st year to 4th year it increase dramatically. This problem excludes a person who spokes Affan Oromo. Language based discrimination is done by gate guard, some persons works on student affairs and in all department that are found in the Adama Science and Technology University. I mention this problem as the problem of the university because of me and some of my friends are faced when we are 1st year student .So during such situation in order to get quick response what we asked there have to translator. I believe this problem is reduced for the coming fresh man students.
Shortage of drinking water
During those academic years the supply of drinking water diminished from time to time. In Adama Science and Technology University compound there is large number of taps , but from those some of the taps can supply drinking water and the supply of the water is restricted within time. As I observed the shortage of the drinking water increased from time to time the students are purchase packed water from the shop. So this problem is not solved quickly students befall of additional expense. Such problem is related to the global warm so to decrease this problem the university must dig additional water hole to resist such problem and to enhance drinking water supply.
Disruption of student academic years
When we were 1st year student there is many dispute between students and the university’s administration staff. The sources of the disputes are:
Master degree is given to students who scored cumulative GPA 3.5
and above and Laptop must be given to students those who cannot afford to buy
During that academic year the student complains about many things including the sources of disputes but the university’s administration didn’t give attention. So that to get the attention of the staff students cabal by absenting during class hour, shouting in café hall and additionally students spill their breakfast on the air. In that difficult situation we got many admonitory from the senior student in brochure form. To solve this problem students and the university senates are met many times but all meeting is dismissed without agreement. So lastly the senate solve the problem by suspended all student from 1 st year to 5th year students for a month and also suspended some students for year.
Wi-Fi accessibility in university’s compound
When we stayed in Adama Science and Technology University for four year the accessibility of Wi-Fi is decrease from time to time. But the reason why the accessibility of the network lay off is not known. When we are fresh man student the Wi-Fi network is available in all spots of the university’s compound like:
In all schools building
In and around female , central , natural applied and liberal library In some dormitory building
But after some year the Wi-Fi availability restricted only in those library and in the library the speed is not fast as before. When we use the Wi-Fi network in the library there were student who cuts the network and let out students using the network. So to resist this problem student must use net cut defender application for laptop, if this application is not installed to their laptop students not use Wi-Fi network efficiently. I believe this problem would be solved to the coming academic year.
Student approach to their lecturer
When we are lower grades, we have good relation with our teachers. However, as we increase our class level this relation is keeping down. This problem is mostly subsisting in higher education facilities like collage and universities. In Adama Science and Technology University such problem faced students. Before we begin our first year class the head of the fresh man said to us all the lecturer are close to our student as family, but this thought is practicable by few lecturer. Unlike this lecturers there is not disciplined lecturer are found in the university. Those lecturers are thinks they are perfect and there are not mistaken whatever they do. And they don’t give necessary knowledge to the student and also don’t cogent answer to the students when they are asked. When the student complains about their behavior to the department or other staff they don’t give attention and they don’t listen resentment and stand by their side.
Deteriorated computers in the laboratory
This problem we experienced during 1st year and 2nd year student. When we are fresh man we take python and C++ course .This two courses needs practice in computer laboratory ,but most of the computers are malfunctioned and due to this problem 3 up to 5 students practice on one computer. During such group practice all students don’t practice and not get what they deserve and the laboratory hour give out some of students don’t practice. This problem comes with us up to 2nd year student. In 2nd year second semester we take the curse called machine design. This course need more practice than the theory or lecture hour. When we practice during the laboratory hour, the applications (catia 5 and solid work) are not installed appropriately and these two applications are not exist in the computers.
Conclusion As noted at the outset, none of these problems kept us from accomplishing the scheduled academic year. But they did make the teaching and learning process difficult for students especially for fresh man students. Moreover, in case of the disruption of students, there were many things are happened like most of students are jump of the qulibi gate and they withdraw from the university and don’t come back. We were fortunate that serious injuries are not occurring to us during fall down from the gate.
I strongly argue that the administrative staff and the senate have to ask to correct these problems before accepting new students for new academic year. ADAMA SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY
